who was she?
« on: Sunday 24 August 08 13:35 BST (UK) »
emma rundle first cert and intention to marry was 1857 to john ryan 65th regiment and vc winner, married in new plymouth by horatio groube, no parents recorded for her in any certs we have.
john ryan died in 1863.

emma married in 1869 wanganui to james snook/s (both spellings used all throughout different certs.
between 1863 and 1869 emma possibly had 2 daughters to a john o'neil(l) yet no marriage record but found christening records that may or may not be her but for witnesses to one daughter being on emmas marriage to james and another daughter having similar info, as well as 1 harrison st wanganui mentioned which is where emma and james married and wedding cert says residence of mrs ryan.

we can find no birth entry for emma although richard rundle and wife had the white hart hotel  new plymouth or lived there and the nz rundle tree has no emma in it that would fit our emma in.

emma has also used emily catherine ryan as her name and also emelia snooks nee randell on one o'neil daughters marriage cert, that daughter raised my gt nan.

emma and john ryan had no children that we know of and james and emma had 5 children, have tracked descendents of all children bar the youngest and no one has any info on emma/ema/emelia/emily or parents etc.

she died in 1900 patea where her children with james were born, dying of emphysema/coma and buried in roman catholic umarked grave in patea cemetery, her husband james died 1898 and buried in eppisconial section. emma could not write but her occupation given as nurse on certs, born new plymouth between 1839-42 as age at death given as 59yrs.

on some certs her maiden name either ryan or rundle/rundel/randell have been unable to link her to any families yet and no birth cert, have aquired intention to marry certs of both marriages, her death cert, and other certs of her childrens marriages, deaths and births etc but still shed no light. she is on the womans suffergette petition as a domestic. The one photo of her and james was destroyed years ago.

she is not the only mystery but it seems she left a legacy of family not recording details and when they were bought on more brick walls and confusion, have checked so many numerous sources and this search was started over 20yrs ago with many people around nz who help and have helped very much yet still no closer to finding out who emma was and who her parents family were let alone her husbands line from england. her surname on one cert as runnle, again the multitude of names lead nowhere and maybe someone could have advice about where next to look as feel have exhausted most resources.

i head to south taranaki in a week and will visit puke ariki, and museums in patea, wanganui etc although patea museum tried to help.

i think i have covered most things briefly and will offer what info i have if anyone can help with this as every descendent i have found often know nothing until i give them what i have. also emma was either 15-16- or 17yrs old when married as different ages on marriage cert and itm, but no parents recorded their consent, any suggestions of help with this??? be most appreciated if anyone comes up with something new or different than what we have already, need a breakthrough!!!!! and finally decided to put up this post, cheers to all in advance and hi to any that are connected!!!!!!

Hi Pixie,

Sorry if this sounds like a downer.  Birth of your Emma in 1839 - 1842 is very early and record keeping could be nil, records have also been lost in the early wars, plus fires.   I have found some of my family from Taranaki had been taken to Nelson in the wars, and birth records have shown up in this area.

I also have found regarding consent to a marriage, if a young woman wanted to marry and there were no family New Zealand to give their consent, they just married.

Hope you find something on your trip to Taranaki, one place that I would love to spend a few weeks searching, also the Stratford group have some great records.

Thanks heaps Christine.

Just to add, had some more certs from BDM, it seems Emily also used the maiden surnames of Wall, and Alberry but can find no other reference to those surnames anywhere, can anyone help?

Hello Pinkie6. My great great grandmother was the daughter of James Richard Snook and Emily (Rundle) Snook. Would live to learn more if this is related to your search!
