My Steel brickwalls
My great great grandmother Sarah Steel born 1820 in Byfield Northants gave birth to 4 illegitimate children
Henry 6th August 1841 – my great grandfather – I know all about him
James 19th December 1845 - Problem no. 1
Eliza Sammons 27th February 1848 ( the only one to give a clue to her father) – Problem No 2
Hannah born ? Around 1855? possibly in Daventry workhouse, birth not registered, ( she was baptised at Daventry, and the workhouse records for that period have been destroyed) but I can find her right through to the 1901 census
So James and Eliza are the problem, they both disappear.
1851 Sarah and the children are lodgers with a Sarah Hughes ( Sarah Steel (e) was living with her father until his death in 1847) in Byfield.
1861 Sarah is a cook at Daventry workhouse, James, Eliza and Hannah are living together in Byfield, James at 15 shown as the head of household.
James married Catherine Eyles on 13th July 1869 at Byfield ( Byfield PR's are on Free REG) at his marriage he was a policeman stationed at Wellingborough.
By 1871 James, Catherine and their 2 children Alice age 1 and James jnr. age 5 months were living in Peterborough and James was still a policeman.
After that nothing. There are Steel births registered in Peterborough after that, but I think they are to an unconnected Steel family. I have gone round in circles looking for Northants police archives, I have E mailed the force but not had a reply.
So where did the family go? I have tried USA, Canada and Australia without any success, (admittedly only what I could access online and Dee looked in Oz for me )
Eliza ( or Elizabeth as she is on 1851 census) I lose after 1861 on any census.
She did turn up on 29th May 1871 at her marriage at Newnham parish church to Charles Bird. Charles is on the 1871 census living with his parents in Newnham ( transcribed as Burt). No more sightings of Eliza after her marriage.
Charles disappears until he turns up on the 1891 census living in Northampton with his 'wife' Jane and a niece Louisa Wall. Now Jane was Jane Elkington nee Wall so Louisa was her niece.
Jane Wall married Edward Elkington in 1869, they are living together in Cold Higham in 1871 and Northampton 1881. Then Edward disappears.
I can't find a marriage of Jane and Charles Bird or deaths of Eliza or Edward.
So to summarize James, Catherine, James jnr, and Alice Steel missing after 1871. Eliza Bird nee Steel missing after 1871, Edward Elkington missing after 1881, all disappeared from Northamptonshire.
I have looked for these so many times I'm sure I'm missing something obvious and you scavengers will find them within minutes, I hope so.
