Deeds St Andrews Scotland
« on: Thursday 27 January 05 22:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have the following deed record from St Andrews in Scotland 1692-1891 from http://www.fifefhs.org

CHRISTIE, JANET: residing St Andrews, widow of John Ireland, labourer Lamboletham; Testemanet in favour of children, James Ireland (carter, St Andrews), John Ireland (quarryman, Inverkeithing), Thomas Ireland (farmer, Sydney), Peter Ireland (farm servant to Andrew Aitken, Carnbee), and Janet Ireland (wife of David Fairbairn, blacksmith in St Andrews), and grandchild, John Ireland (son of sd Peter Ireland); 5 Oct 1849 [B65/7/3 fol 143-45; B65/22/35]

The Details:
[Principally from the Burgh Deed Registers, 1692-1891. There are gaps in these Registers from 1699-1706, 1711-1726, and 1771-1778, and we have used the Burgh Deed Warrants, found in the B65/22 "Record" Boxes to fill these gaps. These record boxes were created in the 1930s, perhaps by Miss D M Bushnell, when a very partial attempt was made to arrange the papers in subject groupings. The result of this re-arranging was the Burgh Deed Warrants, Commissary Deed Warrants and other loose MS papers being broken up, and mixed up together. We have given the location of all the Burgh Warrants that we were able to find in the 122 B65/22 Record Boxes. These boxes also contain other Deeds Warrants, which do not appear to have been "booked" or registered, and some of these, though not all, have been included in this indexing. We have also given the Deeds registered in the Regality Court of St Andrews from 1715-17 and 1726-35, and contained in the volume, GD1/361/1]

I have 2 questions:
1. What does the ‘sd’ in the last line stand for? “grandchild, John Ireland (son of sd Peter Ireland)”

2. Is there likely to be any more information available as there appears to be reference numbers – what do these numbers mean? Or are deeds general very short with not much details?

thanks
Tara  ;)

The answer to the first question is it means "said" i.e. "the said Peter Ireland" who was mentioned a couple of lines previously.

As far as the second one is concerned, I think you will find they are the catalogue number of the will/testament.  If you can get hold of a copy you may well find a lot more information in it - names, relationships, addresses etc.

I suggest you try asking the Fife Family History Society where these records are held.  I've looked at the Scottish Documents site where you can download a copy of a scottish testament for £5, but Janet Christie/Ireland does not appear in the index.
