SLIGH - Langton parish
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 10:44 BST (UK) »
I have hit a bit of a brickwall with my Sligh line.  My 4x gt grandfather, David Sligh,  was born c.1802 in Gavinton Langton (birth date approx. from his death entry, birthplace from 1851 census).  Also from his death entry, I have his parents as William Sligh and Isabella Broomfield.  Other than that I know nothing about them.

Can anyone help? Perhaps there is an MI out there, or some other trace of them.

Thanks

Claire

Hi Claire,
Perhaps you have already elliminated this one but the only Berwickshire birth for a David Sl*gh I can find on S.P's free search was born 1799, Cockburnspath. Putting in the father's name as W*m, however, brings up no matches. Sometimes I have found that the informant has put in the wrong names for the parents.
I have looked at the M.I.'s for Abbey St Bathans, Ayton, Bonkyl and Preston, Parish of Bonkyl, Chirnside, Cockburnspath, Coldingham, Duns, Edrom and Eyemouth but William and Isabella are not in any of these. The old churchyard at Preston has the highest number of Sligh M.I's. I can't see a David either.
On Family search there is a marriage of William Sligh and Isoble Galbreath on 3 Apr 1796 in Ayton. The only child I can find for them was Helen Sligh born 1805 in Duns. This cross checks with S.P. Not much joy there!
I think this is going to be one that will keep you going for a long time.
Good luck,
Rae

Rae,

Thanks for all your hard work, sounds as if you've spent almost as much time on my Slighs as I have!  This one is definitely going to keep me going (maybe there isn't an answer out there  ???).  I have been round in circles going through SP and IGI and anything else I can lay my hands on (difficult when living in Spain, but I do my best)

I do know where David is buried - at some point he moved to Norham, Northumberland and then crossed the border back to Coldstream.  He died at Castlelaw, Coldstream in 1858 and is buried in Lennel cemetery.  There is/was a fabulous gravestone with lots of names on (David, his wife and some of their children) and another contact I made sent me a photo.  Unfortunately there is no mention of David's parents, but am very grateful for all the information contained on this stone.

Anyway, enough rambling.  I'm going to go and focus on someone else for a while and see what  progress I can make.  If this was an easy hobby, it wouldn'e be half as much fun!!!!  :)
