Hi, I live in Swansea and my paternal ancestors came from the Ploughfield area of Hereford.
My grandfather was Albert Skyrme b.09/01/1884 in Ploughfield and christened in St.John the Baptist
church Preston-on-wye. My gr.grandmother was Olive Skyrme b. 1867, Ploughfield. She did not marry,
so I am trying to find out who my paternal gr.grandfather was.
Please can anyone help?

It may be difficult or impossible to find the father of Albert, but you should start by looking at all of the following:

Have you got the 1881 census for Olive and the 1891/1901 census for Olive and Albert? Where were they living and who with?
At Albert's birth: what address was given? Where was he born and where was Olive living? (It may be that the local workhouse infirmary was involved, in which case there could be more records there).
At Albert's marriage: was his father's name given, or at least 'a' name? Who were the witnesses? (I have one marriage certificate where the father's right first name but wrong last name was given - one of the witnesses was a brother using the correct surname).
Does Albert ever use a middle name or middle initial? (even if not officially baptised with it, some children took up the father's surname as a middle name later in life).
When and where does Olive die? Who registers her death?

I can't find 'Ploughfield' - is this the name of a farm/house, maybe?

1871 census shows Olive, age 4, visitor, with Thomas LEWIS. Folio 90 Page 40 Schedule 220
Eliza SKYRME age 34, visitor. Both born Ploughfield, Herefordshire.

Couldn't find anything for 1881 or 1891. I don't have access to later census.

Well, there's a possiblity for Olive as a 15-year-old servant in Hereford St. John the Baptist in 1881. As this is where her son was baptised it seems likely.

In 1881 Eliza is probably the one at the address Ploughfield Highhouse, Preston On Wye, Hereford. (unmarried?).

I think in 1891 Olive and Albert are indexed on a certain website as 'Skyrine' but can't access the full details myself.
