Hull Photographers 1890/1900
« on: Monday 01 September 08 12:10 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of a photographer called J Osbourne who was in the Hull area.  I have a photograph with that name on the front in the bottom right hand corner, dated I would guess 1890-1900.

Kelly's directories of Hull for 1912 and 1913 list a photographer by the name of J Osbourne residing at 29 Prospect Street, Hull.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks Ian.  Now I have an address which is helpful, I wonder how long the photographer had been in Hull.  I don't know if there are any Kelly's for earlier than 1912 in Hull, I'll have a look.  I always tend to forget the directories when I'm looking for old addresses.

Hi Lizzie,

In 1901, there is a photographer by the name of John Osbourne residing at 58 Anlaby Road.

From past research of mine, this has been a popular place for photographers to 'set up shop'.

Kind regards,

Hi All

Just back from holiday.  Rena, that looks interesting, especially as my ancestors lived on Hessle Road.

Just came across your post via google search.
I have a photograph (attached) taken by A J Osbourne of 100-102 Hessle Road.
Seems he specialised in Mariners in general.

Hi SW
It would make sense specialising in Mariners as Hessle Road is quite near to the docks.  My g.grandparents (in the photo I have) had a large tobacconist/confectionery shop on Hessle Road.  My g.gran died in 1926 and when my g.grandfather died in 1935 he left hardly any money at all.  A distant relative whose father worked with my g.grandfather's son said she was told that my g.grandfather was very generous and when the seafarers came into his shop he would either sell them cigarettes/tobacco very cheaply or else just give them away free. ::)

Lizzie

ps.  Interesting  background on the photo you attached, very similar to the one on my g.grandparent's photo.
