WW1 Medal
« on: Wednesday 03 September 08 17:49 BST (UK) »
My wife's Great Uncle was a Private in the S. Lancs Regiment. He was killed on 24th Oct 1914 near Loos and is remembered at Le Touret Cemetry.
My question is:-
I have a bronze medal in the shape of a star inscribed 1914. There is a bronze bar on the ribbon with the dates '5th August - 22nd November 1914'. Are these dates relevant to a particular battle?
Thanks in advance

It's the 1914 Star, sometimes (misleadingly) referred to as the "Mons Star".  It was awarded to those who served in a theatre of war between those dates.  It isn't connected to Mons or any other specific action.

Those who arrived after 22.11.14 and throughout 1915 got the 1914-1915 Star instead.

Catsears has described how to earn the 1914 Star - be in theatre, but to receive the clasp you actually had to be under fire - ie at the front. This link is from the NA site - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp

Sorry, yes, you're right.  (Although I've often wondered how my grandfather managed to qualify for the clasp in an ASC depot!)

It was awarded only to those service personnel in the France and Flanders theatre of war. Those serving in other theatres during this period (including casualties) received the 1914-15 Star.
