Leamington Priors Newspaper Report
« on: Wednesday 03 September 08 23:34 BST (UK) »
Would some kind soul visiting the local Archives be able to find details of a theft committed on the 26th Feb  1851 (Two Pork pies valued at 2/- the property of Thomas Mountford) at Leamington Priors. He was sentenced to 6 mths with Hard Labour at Warwick Lent Assizes on 28th Feb 1851.
I have been trying to locate this chap (my 2x Gt Grandf) for 5 yrs! discovered a 1851 enumeration placing him in Warwick Goal, not the Stone, STS area as expected.
All seems to match but I would like any additional detail if possible.

Hello Barry,

The name of the chap you are seeking would perhaps help anyone
who is doing lookups in warwick RO.

regards,
Margaret.

Hi Margaret,
OOOP's! - Thanks for deserved 'elbow in the rib's.
The chap in question was Joseph BELL, (Son of William) born abt 1828, Trusthorpe/Mablethorpe LIN.
He appears to have committed two thefts of food (Pork pies) in 1851-3 in Leamington before his marriage to Myra BOWERS in 1856, Fulford. (He then settled  down)
I have a lot of data on the families presence in the Stone, STS area post 1861; but I know little of him prior to this which is why I am keen to follow up the Warwick  revelations.

Cheers

Hello Barry,

now it looks like your Joseph Bell MAY NOT have learned his lesson !!

I have found on the Warwickshire Calender of Prisoners the following,

1851  Assises Case No 7 QS 26/1/042  THEFT
Joseph Bell. 25,
6 months hard labour

ALSO

1852 Ephinany Case No 21. QS 26/2/323  THEFT
Joseph Bell, 25,
9 months hard labour

So he may have been a bad,bad boy !!!

Can I suggest you email Warwick  Library  & give these
details & they may well send you copies ( for a reasonal fee). I also
have a naughty boy in 1870 & they were most helpful & sent me
the court details... just a thought anyway...HAPPY HUNTING !
Regards,
Margaret.

Thanks Margaret,
Yup, he seems to have 'strayed' somewhat, but who knows these days what real hunger would drive one to.
I will try sending the local libray an email for help - fingers crossed.
Now back to my pork pies!
Cheers
