Child given for adoption - help and ideas appreciated
« on: Friday 05 September 08 17:15 BST (UK) »
I understand from family gossip that an Aunt (1913-2000) may have given a child up for adoption. The only information is lacking in detail.

The Aunt was born in Belfast and the family moved to Bangor Co Down around 1925.
The family was C of I  but I understand a child was born out of wedlock and given to the Roman Catholic Church. I understand my Aunt converted her Religion at that time. Year of birth is unknown, but I am looking at 1931-1940. She married around 1942.
There are NO further details excepting that in the early 1960's the Aunt tried to trace the child. She had married some years earlier but they had no children from the marriage. They lived in Scotland/England .

I have been to the Register Office in Chichester St who advised that there will be a birth certificate BUT the surname may not be the same as hers depending on the full circumstances at the time.
I had a look at births for the Bangor - Newtownards areas for possible ones but there are dozens with her surname.......remembering that the child may have a different name......and for example been born elsewhere.........has anybody suggestions  who to contact as I understand the Roman Catholic Church was not able to help in the 1960's.

Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions.

Hello yourpete,

I see the Belfast guys have come up with a few suggestions.

Details should be in a Register Office somewhere but the possibility of a different
surname is going to be the problem.

As the child was given to the Roman Catholic Church someone probably adopted it. Thousands of healthy Irish children were sent to the United States for adoption,
from the early 1940s up to around the 1960s, as they were illegitimate and thus "unwanted" at home.
