Kirkby family missing for two censuses??
« on: Sunday 07 September 08 17:59 BST (UK) »
In the Kirkby family from Manchester ( I am missing years 51 & 61)

In the 1841 census I have:

William Kirkby b 1808 Huddersfield m Susannah Thomas b 1813 Huddersfield
Living at Standworth St. London Road manchester
William Kirkby head 30 Machine Joiner not born Lancashire
Susannah Kirkby wf 25 not born Lancashire
North Kirkby son 6 not born Lancashire
Eliza Kirkby 4 b. Lancashire
Mary Elizabeth 1 month b. Lancashire.

But then I can't find any of them until I find Mary in 1871 married to William Henry Baker (iron moulder from Birmingham)

Can anyone find the Kirkby's in 51 and 61? I can't find them anywhere??? ???

Thanks in advance

Hi,

On the 1861 they have been transcribed as Kirkley :'(
RG9/2936 folio 43 page 27

If you can`t find them from this let me know and I will transcribe.

Mo

Just to add that the 1851 census for Manchester was water damaged but quite a substantial amount has been recovered but only available on disc not online.  You may have to ask for a separate look up for them on the 1851 and put Unfilmed or Water Damaged 1851 in the title.

By the way Susannah is once again transcribed as Kirkley on the 1871 census - she is a widow.

A quick tip - if you can`t find who you are looking for on a certain online site, try putting an * after the first three or more letters.  so  a search for Kir* or Kirk*y sometimes helps. This works for places too.

Mo

Thanks ever so much Mo.... I wondered how people could find 'sound alike names' when I never could

Hi

There are rootschatters on here who have access to the water damaged records for 1851.

If you start a new thread asking specifically for a look up in the "Unfilmed 1851 cencus for Manchester" and give the full details of who you are looking for Im sure someone will gladly look for you..

Remember to add a link to your post so nothing gets duplicated

Good Luck

Thanks Jane
Put the post up as you suggested and Dave has sorted me, although Margaret seems to be missing from the family in 1851 ??? ???

Thanks again

Hi Jane

Here is the link to Dave's findings:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,326332.0.html

The parents, William and Susannah were both born in Huddersfield, so I'm wondering if Margaret might have gone back there??

What happens if a child (she would only be about 5 in 1851) was in hospital?? Can't recall ever seeing a census record for a hospital??

Another thing that was quite interesting, was Williams sister and father, Samuel Kirkby were toll keepers in Thurgoland in 1841, 51!!

Thanks

Tracy
