Tipperary/Galway Border
« on: Tuesday 09 September 08 19:49 BST (UK) »
Rootschat members are very knowledgeable so I am coming to you for help.

Would anyone be able to tell me what towns would be on the border of Tipp. & Galway somewhere near the River Shannon, close to Nenagh.

Lough Derg I have read is only about 10 km (5 miles) from Nenagh.

Ancestor, b: 1853 - On his D.M.P. report states Co. Galway, Parish - Modreeny, Post Town - Nenagh. If in the parish of Modreeny it would be Tipp., not Galway or perhaps he was born in Galway....very confusing!  There are no records found in Modreeny, 1846-1911 but Nenagh is too late.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. ???

Nenagh is in Tipp and close to Lough Derg, on the Shannon. The border with Galway looks to be very short. plenty of small towns around but I dont see a Modreeny at this stage

Portumna is just over the River Shannon in Co. Galway,

I wonder is this 'Post Town, Nenagh' refers to the routing for letters etc..

found this in the townland search on http://thecore.com/seanruad

Townland    Modreeny
AKA
Acres           255
County           Tipperary, N.R.
Barony           Lower Ormond
Civil Parish    Modreeny
PLU                    Borrisokane
Province          Munster

you can see the location of the town on Google Maps - enter 'Modreeny, Ireland' on http://www.google.ie/maps   it is located about 18km North East of Nenagh.

Thank you Shane for your reply. Really helpful to me. :)

Does Post Town & Town land mean the same or as you suggested may refer to routing for mail. ???

In that case he may have resided in Lough Derg (on the Shannon) in Galway but getting his mail at Nenagh. That would only be about 5 miles.  Thanks for the map. I will go into it soon & have a look.

I have been looking for this person for about 5 years & where he was born.  No record for Modreeny. From what family can remember, he stated he was born on the River Shannon, nowhere near Modreeny so that is a puzzle.

I notice from your reply the name Wilson that I presume you are looking for from England & Ireland. I also am searching for Wilsons, a George Harrison Wilson & Frances Wheldale. Any connection?  Also the Sheridans.

I've two seperate Wilson lines - one from Offaly (Kings County) in Ireland, possibly originally from Northern Ireland and the other from Leeds, originally from Cambridgeshire.
My Sheridans are from Dublin city.

Modreeny town is near enough to Lough Derg 16km (~10 miles)

this is an extract of what is listed in Slaters Directory of 1894 for Modreeny

MODREENY, a parish in co. Tipperary, barony of Lower Ormond, in dispensary district of Cloghjordan in union of Borrisokane, Protestant diocese of Killaloe, 3 miles south-east from Borrisokane, with station at Cloghjordan on the Great Southern and Western
railway, containing 41 townlands and the village of Cloghjordan....
...area comprises 12,163 acres ; the population in 1891 was 1,640.
..
Letters through Cloghjordan E.S.O. CO. Tipperary
...

The letter delivery route mentioned as Cloghjordan is a town which is on the way to the current town of Modreeny from Nenagh but much nearer.

A google search of the term 'post town' includes the following from Wikipedia and others : 'A post town is a required part of all postal addresses in the United Kingdom, and a basic unit of the postal delivery system. Including the correct post town in the address increases the chances of a letter or parcel being delivered on time.'

'Modreeny' does not appear in any of the earlier edition I have of Slaters (1846,71 & 81)

it appears that there was a Parish and a Townland by this name and there is currently a town of the name.

doing a search of all townlands in the Parish of Modreeny on http://thecore.com/seanruad
lists quite a few ~40, so it is possible that one of these is even nearer to Lough Derg or The Galway border.

I suppose it depends on wheather your source means the Town, Townland or Parish..

Thanks again for this info. Now that I have a general idea, I will start to search again. This has been very helpful & thank you for your time. :)

George Harrison Wilson was married in Boston, Lincolnshire & died in Kingstown, Dublin.  As for my Sheridans, James Henthorn Stanley married Mary Jane sheridan.  There is Arthur Brinsley Sheridan Stanley, b: 1877 Dublin. His son (same name), born 1904, Dublin.  As you may know, Arthur Brinsley Sheridan was very well known.

If any of these names are familiar, please don't hesitate in asking about them.

Hi Maystan,

This is probably a stupid question but I won't know til I ask it!!

I presume D.M.P means Dublin Metropolitan Police. Could 'Post Town' in the context of a DMP report mean some form of a Military Posting in Nenagh, possibly stationed in Modreeny?

Peter.

Usually 'post town' is the town where the mail is delivered from which may or may not be in the same county.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
