Bridgnorth lookup please
« on: Tuesday 09 September 08 22:41 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I am looking for information about George Wilson. Please could someone check the BMD or census records for me. I would be most grateful.

George Wilson born 1881 Bridgnorth Shropshire.
Was in the Royal Marine Light Infantry H.M.S. Carysfort. Died 13 December 1917.
I have some conflicting information about him. He could have been born in N. Ireland in 1894.
I really need to find out the names of his parents to be sure the information I have is correct.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Carole - that was quick. Thank you very much for taking time and trouble to look up for me. I did already have the info from CWGC, but wasn't 100% sure of it because of the other info about the date of birth. Its a bit of a mystery this one, because the CWGC says he was born in Bridgnorth and lived in Plymouth. However, I have his naval discharge papers which state his date of birth 8.4.94. living in Port Glasgow, next of kin John Wilson (father) Coleraine, Co. Derry, N. Ireland. This info ties in with the fact that my relatives lived in Coleraine, Co. Derry. I just can't fathom it out.

Hi

Perhaps a daft question - but does his service number correspond with the one on the cwgc website?

Was his wife Annie?

.Carole - the CWGC states his no. PLY/9192 HMS Carysfort, Royal Marine Light Infantry.
The discharge papers say CLYDE2/2404. Anson Battalion.
The naval war deaths 1914-1921 state G. Wilson Pte. (Ship) Carysfort, year of death 1917.
He is listed on the Terrace Row Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour (Coleraine)
so I'm really confused.

There are lots of George Wilson's so you need to know something about him to determine which is the right one

To your knowledge - was his wife called Annie?

When was their first child born? Do you have a copy of any of their childrens birth certs which will show her name and maiden name?

Her maiden name will help to find their marriage

Their marriage cert will show his age at that time plus his fathers name

If he was b 1894 and died 1917 - he would only have been 23 yrs old

Carole - the facts I have are:
George Wilson born April 1894, baptised May 1894. Father John Wilson, Coleraine, Co. Derry. N. Ireland. Coleraine Chronicle states that he was home on leave in October 1914 to Woodbine Terrace, Coleraine. He was a private in the Naval Brigade. He was discharged medically unfit from Anson Battalion on 27.2.1915. He died in hospital in 1917. Afraid I dont know whether he was married or not. This George is definitely my relative, but the details of the George in Plymouth are also familiar and similar...........very confusing!!!

The George in Plymouth actually died in the war hence the cwgc entry.

The George in Coleraine was medically discharged and only died 2yrs later

I cannot see how the details are similar - one was born in England 1881, was married and died in WWI

The other was born in Ireland in 1894 and was discharged to Ireland and only died 2 years later

If you are descended from a child of the Coleraine George - he must have been married so a copy of that childs birth cert will show the mothers name

Carole, I think the confusion was caused by the details in a book called Coleraine Heroes. The details of the 2 different Georges have been mixed up. Of course you are right, when you look at the details in black and white, they are very different.
Thank you for your time in looking up for me.
