British military units in Canada
« on: Wednesday 10 September 08 12:29 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where I might find information about British Army units posted to the Montreal area in the early 1800's. My g.grandfather came to Montreal Canada from Ireland abt. 1840 with a British Unit - possibly the Royal Engineers. Any and all information appreciated.

Hi Keesa

Did he marry or have children while in Montreal?  The bdm for the garrison's are in the Quebec Drouin collection.

What was his name?

Hi Karen
His name was Robert Jackson. He evidently married in Montreal to Ann Gardiner, but I'm not sure whether he was still in the military at the time. Their 1st. child was born in 1845 - so presumably they were married between 1840-45.

Try the UK 1841 census at military depots. I found my Ggfather at Carlise Castle in Cumbria. The 23rd regiment formed a reserve battalion that went to Canada in 1841-42.  A rebellion in Canada 1838 resulted in British forces being increased and many regiments sent additional men over the next several years.
