Rockmans Arms Inn Garth
« on: Thursday 11 September 08 21:53 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have any information about the history of this pub in Garth? I know that the house is now known as Rock Villa and next door is Rock Cottage.

Back in the 1930's a Thomas & Catherine Jones lived there... i think that Thomas was a Inn Keeper back on the 1901 census but wondered if the family ran the Inn in Garth??

Thanks

Hello Jeannie,

There was an article in "Hel Achau" the Clwyd FHS pubication in November 2000.

Llangollen Ales.   Related innkeepers of Llangollen in the 19th century.

Don't know whether this would include anything but worth a try and you may be able to contact the author John Hughes? I think he had connections with the Rockman too. See his website and contact details here

When I worked for the brewers, Bass, I used to visit the Rockmans Arms quite regularly.  It was more like a small house than a pub and had a dedicated clientele who liked one particular ale at the time.  Happy days!  Pubs like that one are long gone unfortunately.

My great grandmother, Catherine Richards, is shown as living at the Rockmans Arms, Cysyllte, in the 1881 census.  Is this the same place?  Her brother, Evan Richards, was shown as Butcher and Licensed Victualler.

Hello

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Yes, I think it is the same place, but on FindMyPast it is listed under Merionethshire (Corwen district) and Llangollen-Traian (Denbigh) Civil Parish, which is very confusing!

modified - I'm not sure it is the same place that Jeannie asked about, as yours seems to be in Froncysyllte rather than Garth

This BBC site has memories of Rockman's and Trevor in general:

This might be it!  My maternal g grandmother Elizabeth Jones b 1863( Llangollen area)her  father John Jones blacksmith. Born in a pub in Garth area. Given away as a small baby/ child to a cousin Edward Richards( stone mason) and his wife Mary ( childless). Brought up by them and taken to America for 4 years. On their return they had enough money to open a shop in Ruston.
I have never been able to trace her mother or know why she was given away. Your post which I happened upon quite by chance is the closest I have come to thinking there may be a connection as there are the names, Jones and Richards - and the pub.
Can you tell me anything else? I know all about her but not who her parents were..
