Gent family in Golden Valley
« on: Sunday 14 September 08 21:28 BST (UK) »
I have a gt-grandmother Ann Gent, wife of Alexander Searson Stevenson. She was born c1859 in Golden Valley, Dby, which seems to fit with a birth of Anna Gent to Edward & Eliza Gent. I know from family sources that there is some connection with John Gent who made billiard tables in Nottingham at the turn of the century - a Google search for this John Gent also has him as a Licensed Victualler who died 4th Nov 1924.
From censuses:
1881
Edward (44)and Eliza (43) Gent in Pentrich, Dby with son John, 19 a miner and daur Eliza 17, Martha Ann 4 and Isaac 1 all b Golden Valley except the mother bca1837 Shipley Gate.
Alec Stevenson miner & wife Anne at Hempshill Lane Bulwell, Notts both age 21 born "Codner"
1891 (from Freecen)
John Gent age 29 b Golden Valley a beerhouse keeper, with wife Eliza age 29 b Heanor, Dby living in Heanor.
Can anyone help me out with the Gent family (or indeed the Stevensons)? Did the beerhouse keeper go on to make billiard tables? What were the spouses maiden names?
Thanks

John Gent Billiards became Elston Billiards around mid to late  1920s , in 1938 Elston's algimated with Hopkin billiards of Hyson Green to from Eslton & Hopkin ltd .

John Elston worked for John Gent at the Broad Street billiards room , some say as a billiard marker ( Score or referee ) the works on convent street is not mentioned after Elston took the Broad street premises over on John Gents death .
Elston closed the broad street premises and moved to Goldsmith street at the sid eof the theatre Royal in the old Empire theatre building ,  in the early 1930's , and by 1938 Hopkin Billiards of Burnaby hall in Hyson green became partners with Elston .
I worked for Elston & Hopkin for over 33 years from 1980 onwards to 2012 , Elston and hopkin billiards ltd ceased trading in March 2004 .
My firm is the only billiards firm left working on billiard snooker and pool tables  in and around Nottingham and I can say my origination came from John Gent his skills passed down from billiards  fitter to billiards fitter  .
you can still find some John Gent tables in and around Nottingham still in use
Gent also made small 6ft tables for pubs , they where called Licensed Victualler tables , and that may be why  you think he was a licensed victualler .

there are at least 3 John Gents b abt same time and in same area Codnor Park/Marehay/Ripley/ Golden Valley
the John Gent who married Eliza Ann was according to census a Beerhouse Keeper in Heanor Derbyshire then an Inn Keeper in St Anns well Rd Nottingham and then having moved back to Derbyshire was a Billiard Table Maker
So possibly they eventually moved back to Nottingham for the business
It doesn't look like John and Eliza Ann had any children
