« on: Tuesday 16 September 08 08:53 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the regiment number (Army) and Service records for my father, but do not know where to look. I know I would need his regiment number to obtain the service records. Any help much appreciated.

Many thanks

Valerie

At the risk of stating the obvious you will need a bit more info than that, have you a photo of him in uniform or any idea were abouts he served? With a photo at least that might give an idea of his regiment and that would narrow the field down a bit.

Actually you don't need his service number to get his records. It makes it easier for them but they know that a lot of people don't have it.  A regiment, DoB, rough date of enlistment, etc all helps.

Fill out the form with as much info as you have, and make sure to ask for photocopies of the original file.

Thanks for the information. I also want to find the service records for another soldier who was in the Merchant Navy during WW2. I have his regiment number. Where would I apply for these?

I have just looked at the "Next of Kin" forms and it states that the service number is mandatory, along with rank held, date of discharge and a whole lot of other stuff my mother doesn't know about her father.  So Kyt, are you speaking from experience....because I have not sent in this form because I felt they would take one look at my lack of information and dismiss it.  I would be excited to know that this has been shown not to be the case.

Hi Nina

The form actually states that "Some of the fields in this section are mandatory" and that "Service number and/or date of birth must be included"

The only mandatory fields are Surname and Forenames (all).

Personal experience is based on knowing a number of people who have applied for records who did not have a service number. It is true that a service number would greatly assist in tracking down the records. As would as much information as you can fill in. If in doubt it is always worth telephoning them first as they are very helpful in providing general information about the form.

Thanks kyt,

This has spurred me on...I will sit with my mother and fill out what we can over the weekend.
