« on: Tuesday 16 September 08 16:54 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to kick start a friend on the fh trail, but his family hail from West Ham and I'm in Lancashire!!  Up here I use Lancashirebmd for research, is there similar for West Ham and also is this the right area for POPLAR?  Any Help Much Appreciated .... JOHNNIE .... ::)

Well, ... West Ham and Poplar are both broadly East london but are separate parishes/areas.

This site can be useful
http://www.parishregister.com/

but generally I use the GRO indexes and censuses etc.

Anyone in particular you want help finding?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi Lizdb and thanks for speedy repsonse.  I don't know who I'm looking for!!  Alfred BARKER married Mary Adelaide ? abt 1888,  I have found a daughter Elsie Adelaide bn Poplar 1895, A/M/J 1c 626, so I'm hoping Mum's maiden name is on cert but don;t know where to get copy from, it's Mum my friend is looking for.   Problem is Ancestry says Poplar, Bromley, London AND West Ham, I'm running round in circles here!

Thanks - JOHNNIE from a very wet N.W Lancs .....

It can get a bit confusing, because there was a Bromley (now known as Bromley-By-Bow) near Poplar, and there was also a Bromley in Kent (which is now almost London) which (although on the other side of the Thames) is still close enough for confusion.   Try Google Maps which will show you a good layout of the area, in both map and satellite views.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Regarding Bromley south of the river, it would still have been in Kent at that time, I think.  It's now part of Greater London, a town centre and a borough.

I can't find a marriage between Alfred and Mary yet, still looking!
