Baptism - WILSON Carrington
« on: Wednesday 24 September 08 14:10 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone out there who can help please? I've recently discovered that I am descended from a CARRINGTON WILSON, he is named as the father of ANN LORD in 1820. The bastardy order says he is late of Kirby, Essex and his occupation is given as 'Seedsman'
Having checked the census returns the only likely person seems to be a Carrington Wilson aged 50 born in Suffolk and living in Ipswich - with a Martha Wilson (Ann's mother was a Martha) but I do not believe that they ever married. In 1851 Carrington is by himself in Essex aged 65, but still says that he was born in Ipswich, Suffolk.
I wonder if there is anyone who can tell me details of Carrington's baptism, as I seem to have hit a brick wall!!

Welcome Bostel!

I hope that you will visit us often and make lots of progress.  Please be sure to register your names on our SURNAME INTERESTS TABLE.

http://surname.rootschat.com/

There were many parishes within Ipswich

St Clement
St Helen
St Lawrence
St Margaret
St Mary Stoke
St Mary Elms
St Mary Quay
St Mary Tower
St Matthew
St Nicholas
St Peter
St Stephen

As well as several other parishes which were created after Carrington would have been born.

So it will quite a large task to check all of these, but free lookups for some are available from the Suffolk Surnames List and some of our rootschatters have access to microfiche PRs or visit the SRO and may be able to help.  These parishes are also all available for sale on microfiche from the SRO.

Taken from Ipswich Journal = April, 11th, 1891.

A feature on Monumental Inscriptions in St. Nicholas Churchyard, Ipswich.

        Sacred to the Memory of
                    CARRINGTON
SON OF CARRINGTON AND MARTHA WILSON
who died 28th October, 1831, aged 21yrs.

Oh glorious hour, Oh blest abode
I shall be near and like my God
And flesh and sin, no more control
The sacred pleasures of this soul
My flesh shall slumber in the ground
Till the last trumpets joyful sound
Then burst the chains of sweet surprise
And in my Saviours image rise.

=================

Sacred to the Memory of
MARTHA WILSON
The beloved wife of Carrington Wilson Snr.
Master Mariner of this town
who died 20th November, 1848, aged 66yrs.

What sinners value I resign
Lord tis enough that thou art mine
I shall behold thy blissful face
And stand complete in righteousness
This life is a dream, an empty show
But the bright world to which I go
Hath joys substantial and sincere
When shall I wake and find me there

In 1841 Carrington Wilson was living in Friars Street, his residence at the time of his sons death in 1831, being in the register book entered as Boat lane.

Thanks to you all for the replies received to now.

The death for a wife Martha indicates that this is not the same Carrington Wilson as the one in the bastardly report, as I have Martha's death as Martha Lord in Essex in 1875.  I think therefore that the Carrington in the census is not the one that I'm searching for.

Thanks everyone, I'll have to try Essex again.

I have a much earlier Carrington Wilson in my family, baptised 1732 at Tendring, Essex (much closer to Kirby) and not far from Gt Bromley either. He was the son of Francis Wilson and Mary Carrington. He was an ancestor of the Barrymores (of Hollywood fame).

I have recently discovered that Francis Wilson and Mary (Carrington) of Tendring had a grandson, Carrington Wilson baptised 4 Oct 1785 at Tendring, son of their son, William (1740) and his wife Alice Simpson. He would be a good candidate for the mariner in Ipswich who was buried at Gt.Bromley in 1851, aged 66.
