Baptist minister
« on: Wednesday 24 September 08 18:48 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Today I found a relative who I think married Adam Dalton in 1859.  I found them on 1881 census & it said that Adam was a "Baptist Minister Sutton At Hone Chapel".  Would anyone know anything about the Chapel & if there are baptisms & burials records for the Chapel anywhere ?
I think my relative Mary Ann Langford married Adam Dalton in 1859 in Christchurch, Southwark, London.  It says Mary Ann Longford on the record on LDS & Freebmd but im sure it is my Mary Ann Langford.

Doesnt look like Sutton at hone Baptist Chapel is still there
see
http://www.city-visitor.com/suttonathone/placesofworship.html

not many Baptist Churcheshave burial grounds - though some do. The local record office will probably be able to advise if this one did and if any burial records survive.
You are unlikely to get christening records of babies. In  Baptist churches people can be baptised at their own request when old enough to make the  decision for themselves, rather than as babies.

The Baptist Union might be able to tell you more about the chapel and what dates your ancestor was minister

Just a thought, but the parish church of Sutton at Hone is called St John the Baptist!  Do you know if your relative was definitly of that persuasion? Otherwise try MedwayCityArk website for C of E parishes it is good for the NWKent area but has no search within the site. Good Luck  ama

He is described as baptist Minister in 1891 too

RG12 644 140 4
Station Rd Longfield

Adam Dalton 64 Baptist Minister bn Shorne
MAry A 67 wife bn Meopham

- ama- I wondered that too, but Anglican Vicars/curates/rectors etc not usually reffered to as a Minister.
I'll see if he is consistantly a Baptist Minister in other censuses - or if they give any clues that he might be linked to John the B parish church

1861 is interesting

RG9 473 11A 19
Meopham

shown as two households this time:

Richard Langford widwr 60 Farm Bailiff
Frederick 9 son

Adam Dalton 34 Cordwainer
Mary A wife 37
George F 1 son

So before becoming a Minister Adam was a cordwainer (boot n shoe maker) - makes me realise that in 1871 it must have said BOOTMAKER rather than bookmaker! ! !
Looks like he started his ministry part time for a while, whilst continuing his trade.

And here is the Richard with dtr MAry in 1851:

HO107 1609 160 4

Melika Farm?
Meopham

Richard Langford 50 farm lab
Sarah 48
Mary 29 (maybe 27?)
Caroline 24
Richard 22
Elizabeth 13
James 11
Thomas Willey lodger.

Of course we do not know that the Mary Dalton living with the Richard Langford in previously censuses was his daughter - could have been niece or cousin.
What father is given on the marriage cert?

I wonder why they married in London?

Very interesting info. I can't recall a Baptist church in Longfield, only a Bethel Church which I believe is no longer there. However I have just consulted a relative who also knows the area, and through th North West Kent Family History Society site, we have found

Bethesda Chapel Sutton at Hone 1834
and Baptist chapels at Meopham and Ash-next-Ridley

check the site, but these are probably the nearest, but probably not present day.    ama
