Need another pair of eyes on Service Record pl.
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 11:52 BST (UK) »
I have the WWI Service Record of my grandfather, Edward Linton FRENCH, b. 1898, Kent (Loose/Coxheath area).   Regimental No. 23600 3rd Btn The Buffs.

From A******y, I've been able to see what survives of his record - it's pretty dog-eared, but image number 12462, shows that he was in hospital between 23.9.1918 - 22.10.1918.   There are two entries on this page, the second appears to read G.Sw. L/arm (possibly just 'general swelling left arm'), but the first entry I'm finding almost impossible to decipher and another pair of eyes would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure if this has any bearing on a possible transcription,  but although he never spoke of it, my Gran always told me he had been gassed during WWI and that that was the reason he subsequently lost a lung, a kidney and suffered from ulcerated legs for the remainder of his life.

If anyone has an opportunity to look at this image and hazard a guess at the first entry I would very much appreciate it.

My thanks
Mogsmum

Hi Mogsmum

I see what you mean. Maybe you can enhance it.

GSW I believe is Gun Shot Wound.

Blooming 'eck I'm not surprised you are having trouble, sometimes if you download it and turn it negative you can read it back to front  ::)

You might not be able say the name, but like black and white movies, you can show a bit  ;)

GWS  ??
Bullet ?? (could it be Bullet left?)
T & T

Is this all from one entry in the medical record or more than one? If one, T & T might be the treatment.

I think you are more or less spot on Ken, it does look like 'bullet' to me too, and most possibly 'left' or more iffy perhaps 'scar'.

Does anyone else see what could be be 'GSW ... thigh'  on the line above?  or is just me!

I think you're getting there with this one folks  ;)
My 2 pennies worth: I'd go for T&T meaning "through and through".
A T&T wound being one where the bullet passed straight through the body without lodging.

That looks like the same wound but two hospitals/sets of treatment.
The discharge date for the top entry (22/10/18) is the same as the admission date for the bottom entry.
Do you know what is in the Hospital column to the left of that clip Atom?

Phil

Ancestry is not playing for me now, or I am too tired, I will have a look again tomorrow if no-one else comes in, but I can only recall seeing one  militarystamp at the bottom entry.  :P

I'm really appreciating all this help folks, thank you so much.   I suppose it should have been obvious to me that G.Sw could have been gunshot wound.

I'm extremely poor at reading this type of thing, but I to my very untrained eye, there do appear to have originally been two stamps.

Only part of the first seems to have survived (unless it's an imprint from another page/document) and I'm afraid I can't make out much of it, I'd hazard a very amateur guess at ---- CAM or  ----DAM then possibly 3 P?   Followed on the next line by NOH?TER

I think the top of the second stamp says Military Convalescent Hospital and my first thought was that the lower part said Deptford Camp Pl???, however, on reflection I think it could say D????ford Camp, Plymouth - possibly?
