ATHER or GOFF - Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire
« on: Friday 26 September 08 17:17 BST (UK) »
Hi all, new here and am after some help !
After a lot of trawling around I can't find anything on the ATHER name, other than a few birth registrations around the 1880s.
My lineage as I've worked it so far..
Jason Goff (b1969)
son of
David Colin Goff (1939-1991)
son of
Percy Goff (1914-1995)
Percy's birth certificate shows his father as Thomas Goff and mother as Alice Mary Tarbox.
Their marriage cert. shows names as Thomas Athergoff and Alice Mary Tarbox (1902)
The only birth records I can find in the area are of a Thomas (Tom) Ather (1883), whose parents are Thomas and Eliza (nee Smith).  Thomas is listed as Hawker on Tom's birth certificate. Census records have him as a Tinker.
I think Thomas Goff, Thomas Athergoff and Tom Ather are the same person.
Does anybody have any information on Athers, Goffs or Tinkers/Hawkers in the Beaconsfield area in the 1880s, or can direct me where to look next in terms of research.
I'm fascinated to find out if it is the same person, and if so why the name changed.
Thanks !
Jason
