Change of Surname or Divorce records
« on: Sunday 30 January 05 16:54 GMT (UK) »
I'm interested to know if there are any records for name changes or divorces  in Scotland.
(I would be interested in the Glasgow or Aberdeen areas about 1910-1920)
Aberdeenshire and Banff - Benzie, Walker, Forsyth, McIntosh. Lancashire Chippendale, Parr, Houghton

Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

I dont know if everyone else knows this and it was just me that didn't, but just in case its helpful

It wasn't until I sent for, and received a copy marriage cert of a couple who later divorced that I realised they put the details of the divorce on the back of the marriage cert (in Scotland anyway).  I knew the couple had divorced, but not when and so was delighted to get this info from their marriage cert.

Also if you have an original copy (from when they actually married) of a marriage cert for a couple you suspect later divorced, it may be a good idea to send for a copy and then you will get the info.

Does anyone know if this is how it works with English Marriage certs as well.

Re name changes : I am not sure how it works in England but under Scots Law providing you are not trying to evade a criminal action you can call yourself anything you want.
You do not need to go through any court or legal process to carry out the change you simply tell everyone that needs to know that as of date x you wish to be known as  whatever new name you have chosen.

Search the online catalogue at www.nas.gov.uk - it has details of divorces from the early 1900s.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
