Help Needed With Location
« on: Sunday 28 September 08 12:51 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping that someone on this forum can help me with a genealogical "brickwall" that I am struggling with at present.

I am looking for verification of where 'Tidal Basin' is in Essex.

To cut a very long story short the only information I have on an ancestor (William Sibbons) is his army record from 1914. His place and date of birth is listed as '1886 - Tidal Basin, Essex'.

My findings seem to point to 'Tidal Basin' actually being Canning Town, but I was wondering whether anyone else had any other ideas as I cannot find any record of said William Sibbons in the BMD index or in LDS parish records. I have found a possible match on the 1901 census but cannot find anything else to back that up (I could not find the listed Mother on any other census either), so I am now wondering whether 'Tidal Basin' is not Canning Town but is in fact somewhere completely different.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance  ;D

Hi Flouncylicious,

I see a 1902 directory mentioning Tidal Basin in Canning Town

Hi Tati  ;D

That is where I ended up when I tried to locate Tidal Basin and as Canning Town was where William signed up for his army service I went with it, but I cannot find anything conclusive with regards to Williams' birth or his parents' indentities. In other words I'm very very stuck!!

Many thanks once again for taking the time to assist me  :)

I've looked on the Essex Record Office Catalogue and the only Tidal Basin that comes back is Silvertown/Canning Town.

Thank you Keldon, your help is much appreciated.

It does look like I am in the right place, so Williams' childhood/parentage seems to be a bit of a mystery. If anyone has any ideas on how to find more info on the elusive family of William Sibbons I would much appreciate any imput.

Many thanks  ;D

What entry (with refs) was this?

Hello Flouncylicious,
I've just "google imaged" Tidal Basin +Canning, and some pretty interesting pictures and links come up.
I haven't posted them as I'm not sure of copyright etc., but it's worth a look.

Pauline I have to confess I've never used refs from the census before so I'm just taking a guess at how its done.

1901 census William Sibbons born 1885 Canning Town - Ref RG13/1582 (though the 1 in 1582 appears to have been tampered with).

If this is not what you meant apologies but I'm a bit of a reference novice.

Many thanks once again.

Sorry edit I've just found that is should read RG13/1582 and that the Folio is 141 and Page is 2.

Hmm,

People get the hang of refs as soon as you realise you can go straight to the correct page knowing them...

Well the Joseph in 1901 I think is registered as

Joseph Sibbone     1887     Jul-Aug-Sep        b    West Ham
http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=view&r=5538&dbid=8912&iid=ONS_B18874AZ-0250&fn=Joseph&ln=Sibbone&st=d&ssrc=&pid=

So it again puts us in the area, but no closer to finding William.
