Hello,
I am looking for details of a Charles Fletcher, born around 1811-1816 (later census returns vary as per usual!). He moved to Gosport/Portsea sometime before 1848. His daughter Hannah,born Gosport 1848, married James Sedgwick (Sedgewick) 1864. His son Samuel Fletcher, 1850-1912) married Amelia Hoar in Portsea 1871. His son Charles maried Kate Hawkins (my grandparents).
The later census details note him as being born either Yorks,Hull ot Yorks,York. I am guessing that Hull is correct. He is down as a stonemason, but I suspect that this was little more than a bricklayer (but could be wrong).
It is possible that he married Hannah Dyson in Halifax (TBC by others chasing lines) who died 1851. He later married the widow next door, Mary Ann Poland (nee Sherwell), although I cannot find a record of this marriage. (Mary had 4 children, all Polands, Sarah Ann, Mary, Elizabeth and Benjamin).
There may be a link with a William Fletcher who married Ann Day ...
If anyone knows of this line, especially the useful detail that he moved to the Portsmouth area, I would be grateful for contact.
Also, I would like to know what famliy he had. I am trying to trace a "great Uncle" who had a distinguished naval career in the Opium Wars. I have a photo, and would like to put a name to him.
I am chasing lines as I did not know or have contact with my grandparents, and therefore have a large family out there to find.
Following my wife's lines and my mother's lines my extended family already stands at over 6,000 people! It would be nice to link in my Fletcher heritage.
