Marriage of John Patten and Elizabeth ??? circa 1810
« on: Monday 29 September 08 16:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I would be very grateful for help in finding out who John Patten married, and where the marriage took place.

According to the 1851 census in Bocking John was born about 1784 in Fordham, Essex and his wife Elizabeth was born about 1791 in Coggeshall, Essex.

Their first child was born 1811 in Wethersfield according to the 1851 census.

Any help, especially with church records would be much appreciated.

Hi

Managed to find the baptism of John Patten - 22 Nov 1780 at Fordham.  His parents were a John Patten and a Rebecca Green.  However, his marriage is illusive!  From the 1841 Census the children mentioned there are a Charles born c1830 in Bocking and an Elizabeth born c1832.  However, I found Charles on the 1861 Census with a brother - James born c1820 also in Bocking so you would imagine that there are more siblings.  His wife Elizabeth appears to have been some 11 years younger than him.  Obviously more information could be obtained by visiting the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford and looking at the parish records for Wethersfield but I think looking at Bocking would be equally useful because of the place of birth given by James and Charles.  Given that John Patten was approx 41 when James was born it maybe that he was married before and that wife died young?

I hope some of this helps?
Deborah
