BENTLEY Family
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 14:22 BST (UK) »
My grandfathers nephew in New Zealand emailed me this excerpt from my grandfathers sisters diary - just before she passed away: its truly amazing... but now i have many things to find on the tree haha...

Code: [Select]
She recalls....." I remember going
to grannie's in Yorkshire [Baildon] where UncleTed and Aunty Annie lived
next door...he was a very keen gardener..Uncle George, dad's eldest
brother lived in the next street with his wife Aunty Laura..they had 3
boys William, Fred,Robert  who  all worked in the Baildon Woollen Mills.
Grandad  used to wander off down the road and hop on a bus with no money
and nowhere to go, but  the driver would take him for a ride and drop
him off close to home...auntie Ettie used to tie a tag around his neck
with his name and address on so people could see him home...He died when
he was 78......[ no doubt he travelled a lot]. Grandma died when she was
92.... Dad's sisters were Mary,Ettie,[Hetty???]Lotty. Lotty had 2
children...Ted and Hetty
.Ettie[Hetty] and Mary never married...they looked after Grandma who
was very partial to a drop of brandy.
Aunty Lottie was 99 when she died...I didn't  see much of them as they
lived in Otley near leeds..
Those were my fathers relations 6 of them
.George,Ted,Jess,Lotty,Hetty,Mary...Dad[Jess] ran away from home and
joined the army and fought in the Boer wars, then went to Liverpool  and
worked in a drapers store where he met and married my mum,Milly Stockley
, who lived in Bloxwich near Walsall..Grandad Stockley was a coal miner
.never met Grandma she died early. Mum had a brother Tom who worked in
the mines..he was very tall but died about 28 years of age...
Dad [Jess] managed a shop in Stanley Rd Bootle where i was born..I had 2
sisters, Alice and Mary, who died when she was 5 years old, and 2
brothers,Bill and George......"....................[.to be continued]

Hi Sonia  ;D

I popped over to the other topic, and put my tuppence-worth in there!

Now, with the information in that topic, combined with what's here - you have happily gathered a lot of information re:

B D M and Census and more,  of your BENTLEY  and STOCKLEY ancestors.

IMHO, perhaps you now wish to consolidate that information, then post new topics asking for help as/when/if you need it - but always: list what you already have (with references) so folk don't go "doubling up" on searches - nothing has us gnashing our teeth more, as happy as we are to spend hours digging up the bones of someone else's family, than to find we've spent ages re-inventing a wheel  ;D

I see you have  also recently  posted messages on other forums, as is your perogative, of course (Ancestry Aid included - I visit there occasionaly, so spotted it  ;D) and have been provided with much of the same information as on Rootschat  ;D Your head will be spinning trying to keep up with replies  and computing of info!

For example, on this topic (and the other one here at Roots as linked above) I didn't see a whole lot abt Lottie BENTLEY and Ted BENTLEY - and would quite happily have a delve for you - however I am googling up references to them on other forums ...so, perhaps you now have more information on them provided elesewhere?

Then of course, taking the William BENTLEY/Rachel SLATER  and William STOCKLEY/Margaret BATES  back to before  their marriages,,,again not sure if or what you need there.

Let us know how we can help you further.

Cheers  :)

Morning Ambly

I would love more info on the Lottie and Ted, im trying to work out if the George (oldest brother) did pass and if so why did Mabel call him the oldest brother - confusing... i would love the WW1 records that would be fantastic- have PMd you my email.

I dont really have much on the other siblings etc apart from what Mabel wrote in her diary - i am eagerliy awaiting my next portion of it, bless my grandfathers nephew - he must be in his 60s and staying up til midnight to help me haha!!! I feel honoured!

I am trying to piece together what happened to M Bates... she died early - but im not sure when as i cant find the record.

and im basically trying to puzzle together Mabels info with what i already had!!!

Thanks guys  :P

Mabel continues  "Dad decided to  open a drapers shop in
Strand Rd Bootle, but lost the business due to his taking the money from
the till and betting on the races....losing most of it. Mum used to work
in the shop trying to hold it together but eventually Dad was bankrupt
and  the shop had to go."
[ Me speaking now....mum goes on a bit about her friends and work and
where  they would go for dances..etc then  says...]"my friend  Muriel
Hesketh invited me to tea one night and some of her brothers friends
were there, one of them pinched my gloves and wouldn't give it back
unless i went to the pictures with him tomorrow night, that was Alex
Jones..After about 6 months  i met his mum and dad and sisters..... and
when i was 21 became engaged.
Mrs Jones was a cockney born in London and her husband Charlie was born
in Bristol ,a very quiet man, they had 6 children Alfred,Maude,
Gertie,Carry,Dolly and Alex. Alfred was killed in the 1914-1918 warMaude
married and lived in Everton,Gertie married a third engineer Jim Cargill
and lived in Bootle,Carry married a ships steward Tom Barton,Dolly
married a drayman and i can't remember his name...Mrs Jones had a sister
,Mrs Dunbar who was a sea captain. They had a son who joined the Cunard
line and rose to be Lieutenant Commander and sailed on the Queen Mary.....
.Shortly after mum left my dad and  he sold up the household in
Litherland Rd, Alice and I had to look for somewhere to live and found
board with Mrs Davies ,a widow, and stayed for about 2 years.Alex  and I
married when  I was 22years old. He had a very good job as a hairdresser
in a large gentlemen's shop in Liverpool, and we were lucky to get a new
house  in Orrell !3 Howarth Drive where we stayed for about 15years.By
that time we had 3 children...Eyrlys,Olive and Alex junior" [Hey that's
me]....Me again, mum goes on about the war and the bombings and Dad's
call up into the Royal Artillery , and the capture of a german
submarine.....".........the war ended but we were still on rations so we
decided to go to New Zealand or South Africa..we had a leter from Alice
and Harry saying they were going to retire in NZ so that decided it.My
brother Bill, and Alex  travelled to NZ and met up with Alice and Harry
who had purchased a 20 acre farm in Pongaroa.
Harry decided to return to Abadan for a couple of years and Alex and
Bill were to look after the farm till he came back, unfortunately he
died whilst having a  minor operation .We all travelled by sea on the
Rangitata and landed in Wellington NZ  to start a new life
Farming was not Alex's life and he soon got fed up with it and decided
to go back to hairdressing,  so we bought a house in Castlecliff
Wanganui..Bill decided to travel to Australia and then return to England
where he stayed with Mum  at Southport...he took ill and died aged 57
Sandra was born in Wanganui ,the last of the four children.
Alex senior died suddenly of a heart attack one Saturday morning whilst
he was playing bowls in a club tournament,a good way to go, but what a
shock for us all ....[to be continued]
Well the second installment is over and i guess the rest is history so
they say ..mum doesn't mention that Alice and Michael also moved to
Wanganui about the same time i think ... and lived in Gonville. I guess it is up to me
to add my little bits here and there, but will talk with Olive and
Sandra to see if they would like to add their story as well..
Erylys died when she was 52 ,of cancer and god  how we prayed they would
find a cure for her...alas....
Her husband Alan is still alive, and they had 2 boys Barry and Mathew ,
i can't remember their birthdays and haven't seen them for a couple or
so years..Sandra lives close to them so perhaps she can carry that story
a little further..

;D i have spoken to my grandads cousin the infamous ROBERT BENTLEY :) he is still alive and lives in Baildon still and has said that all our family lived in Baildon - except my grandfathers dad who ran away during the war to liverpool.

But then jesse went back to Baildon in his later years and thats where he is buried.

Robert also told me he has ancestry information dating back to the 1700s :) so whoop whoop i cant wait to get that back!!!   ::)

Hi there,

perhaps I can add more to the story by brining it right up to date as Charlotte Bentley (Slater) is my great grand mother.

Charlotte Bentley married John Light and had my Grandmother Ettie (Im not sure about Ted?)

Ettie married Albert Heaps and had two children Valerie and Albert (known as Peter, my uncle).

Valerie had myself Ashley and I have to children Lucy with my ex wife and 12 week old Charles with my girlfirend.

I would love to get my hands on any information on branches of the tree, I've only been looking for 3 days but so far have managed to amass 45 relations in all directions currently going back to William Bentley in 1844.
