WIGAN birth-1856- BURROWS
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 15:18 BST (UK) »
Trying to find birth certificate for ALICE BURROWS b1856,dont know which quarter.
Its not listed on BMD on Ancestry or Lancashire BMD site.
Think Ive got parents marriage cert (Wigan)but need to prove it as there are two choices.
The info I have proved is that her fathers name was SAMUEL and she was born in BILLINGE.
There is a listing for another ALICE BURROWS in STHELENS but this is the wrong person.
Mother (Alice, nee Smith I think) and father are both deceased by 1861.

I would like to find death certificates for parents also but need to find the right ones first.

Any suggestions

Only part of Billinge in Wigan boundary and this has now been made less in recent years and more given to St Helens.

The old Maternity Hospital in Billinge is in Wigan and the road going down to Orrell,  The rest of it iswithin  the St Helens boundary , The Boundaries Commission said that any part of Billinge up to the Hospital is within the St Helens boundary.

I would be contacting the Preston Records Office who hold the majority of the records of both Wigan and St Helens.

That way you would get the correct information

I can only see the Alice Burrows, orphan in 1861 census.

Free BMD has possible marriages:
1854 Wigan
Samuel Burrows  Alice Smith

1856 Prescot
Samuel Burrows - Mary Ann Bothamley or Mary Meredith

Deaths
Samuel Burrows 1858 Prescot
several Mary Burrows and one Mary Ann - 1856-1861 Prescot

Prescot covered St Helens, Prescot, Rainhill, Tarbock, Whiston, Widnes, Farnworth, Sutton, Parr,  it was a vast registration district and a very old one as well.

Thanks for all replies and the welcome.

ALICE BURROWS was my hubbies G Grandmother, she married William HOLDEN 1875 august age19,living in STHelens.
We trace her back to 1861/1871 census as an orphan living with John MURPHY and wife, she is aged 5 and 15 ,states born in Billinge, these MURPHYS are godparents to Alices child later on.

I have Alice Burrows /William Holdens marriage cert which proves year of birth,1856 and fathers name Samuel(deceased)

I have Samuel and Alice Smith marriage cert in Wigan parish church 1854 October, Sam b1833 Alice b1825,both residents of Billinge-fathers are Titus Burrows and John Smith(Blimey)

Also have marriage of Samuel Burrows and Mary Meredith and birth cert of their daughter ALICE  BURROWS b1856 Moorflat StHelens-seems feasable but I discount it cos of the Murphy connection and the fact that she says she was born in Billinge .This is the only birth registered for 1856- Now can you see my confusion?
Maybe she was never registered cos the mother died in childbirth and the father soon after.

What do you think I should do next?

Moorflat was the workhouse in St Helens,  it was where Baldwin Street is now.

The one thing you could have done was say that you already had that information. It does help with any unnecessary searching but no matter.
You discounted one with both parents deceased and I thought that was the one with the Murphys. ::)
I did try to see a connection between Alice and the Murphys but couldn't.
Are there any church records for Alice's baptism?
