So sorry Heywood ,I wasnt very clear
I meant that I discount Sam and Mary in Moorflat due to the fact that on the census with the Murphys, Alice states that she was born in Billinge, which leads me to Sam and Alice as parents as they live in Billinge,
and I know the" Murphys"  Alice is the right one cos they are godparents to Alices child later.

Church records would be handy, but which church? Isuppose it could be Wigan parish church. I did look on Lancashire OPC but could only find this
Burial
7 Aug 1855
St Thomas The Martyr Uppholland
Age 28
ALICE BURROWS
Abode Billinge Higher End

Hmmm???

The trouble is that death is earlier than you have as birth year  ???

I wonder if Alice was registered with another name and then called Alice after her mother died?

I would have thought that Wigan Parish Church would be a good place to start for a baptism since the parents were married there.

Also you could try emailing the church and asking if there could be a check re the burial?  You never know ...
best wishes

Hi

If you are calculating her birth year from her age on censuses, 5 in 1861 and 15 in 1871, then you have to take into account that the censuses where done in early april so a 5 year old in the 1861 census would have been born between 8th April 1855 and the 7th April 1856. Ancestry unfortunately calculates birth year by subtracting age from census year.

There is a birth registered in Ashton Reg District in Sept Qtr 1855, Vol 8d Page 353. I know this isn't the correct district for Billinge but could she have actually been born elsewhere, perhaps at a relatives.

Edit.. It looks like the Alice Burrows born Ashton died as an infant.

Also have marriage of Samuel Burrows and Mary Meredith and birth cert of their daughter ALICE  BURROWS b1856 Moorflat StHelens-seems feasable but I discount it cos of the Murphy connection and the fact that she says she was born in Billinge .This is the only birth registered for 1856- Now can you see my confusion?

Whilst the 1871 census has her born in Billinge, the 1861 census states she was born in St Helens.

Hi Andycand,

Im actually getting the birth year from her marriage cert which states shes age 19 in Aug 1875,living in Baldwin street still.
She could have been born elswhere I suppose as it seems her father was born in Cheshire,I think<but Im just going by what evidence I have.Ive tried the St Helens angle but it doesnt seem to fit.

This woman is something of a mystery, the family story goes that one day when her 2 children where toddlers she upped and left them in the bath and disappeared, talk about brick wall. ::)

Thanks everyone for your input.

I just read that Wigan History Shop has microfiche records for Wigan parish or All Saints Church,

If anyone is using these records in the next week I would really appreciate a look up.

For the baptism of Alice Burrows b1856 father Samuel ?mother Alice nee Smith?

Regards

Could she have been baptised at St. Aidan's church in Billinge?  They have a website for contact details but I don't know where their records are kept.  Just a thought.

Thanks Royd ,yes she could have ,parents seem to be CofE although she later married in catholic church.
These records are also at Wigan History Shop.
I try to avoid contacting churches unless I really have to,dont find them helpful.

Turns out I had all the info here I needed and just hadnt connected it together. ::) Father Samuel first married Alice Smith in Billinge then she died and he went on to marry Mary Meredith in St Helens who gave birth to Alice and it looks like a year later a son Samuel, then Mary died in June 58 and the baby son in July 58.
Haven't tracked down father Samuel Burrows yet but he must have died as Alice is called an orphan on the next census
