Adoption/Orphanage in Doncaster
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 12:09 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I am sorry this is a bit long winded but can anyone help me find an adopted daughter of my Gt Grandfather?  Sadly I have no idea of a name at all.  ???

My Gt Grandfather Harry Hansford committed suicide in 1929 and when I tried to get the coroner's report that year was missing.  I managed to get a newspaper clipping from the local library which partly reads as follows:-

"Frederick Hansford, master plumber, of 26, Union Street, brother of the deceased, gave evidence of identification.  He said he met his brother in the Market Place on Saturday, and his brother then told him that everything in front of him looked black, that his nerves were bad and he felt “right down”.  They walked home together, and on the way his brother said everything worried him and that he did not know how he was going to carry on.  At the same time witness saw him counting over a “fistful of ‘Bradburys’”, but he did not know how much there was.  So far as witness knew, his brother had nothing to worry about, except that his wife was in a convalescent home, and his adopted daughter was in an orphanage."

I asked mum about this but she does not remember a "sister" of any kind and Grandad never mentioned it.  Harry's father George also committed suicide in 1901.  Mum always told me about the "Hanging Hansfords" but I was never sure whether to believe her or not  ::)

Harry & Elizabeth married in January 1902 in Brodsworth and Grandad George was born in August 1902 and Sidney was born in 1904 so there is no information on the 1901 census.  Elizabeth lived until 1967 and this was sadly an accidental death by carbon monoxide poisoning as mum said she would easily have outlived 100.  :o

I can't wait for the 1911 census, maybe this can shed some light.  If anyone can help with some information in the meantime I would be most grateful.  I would love to find out who she was.
