Margaret Cornes 1863 GV at BAngor
« on: Saturday 04 October 08 19:35 BST (UK) »
Dear List
Just found some info on Margaret Cornes, born ?? where..she was MARGARET GRAHAM
Husband was in army JOHN CORNES  died 1863 Parkhurst.she was not with him in 1861 census

NOw at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/C/Cor.htm it has her in Griffiths Valuation "of Catherine Place, BAngor, leased a house, offices & yard in 1863 from reps Ellen HAlliday"

Is there anyway that this info can tell us more about Margaret?

Margaret dies 4 Sep 1894 at Ballymagee. We have her will but don't know where she was buried. Her executor was Very Rev Edward Maguire Dean of Down, she leaves some money to Margaret and William Jamieson (where she is living, 26 Ballymagee Street)

Many thanks
Althea

Major John Cornes,1805?-1863 H.M.18th Irish Regiment. married Margaret Graham bn 1810, md abt 1833. 4 sons. Margaret's will dated 1891, her D/Cert dated 4 Sept. 1894, last known address, Ballymaree St. Bangor, Antrim [Source from boards.ancestry.com/surnames.corne/4/mb.ashx]
I note from your notes her executor was Dean of Down, who  might be Dean of Downpatrick Cathedral as Down is the parish that includes Downpatrick Cathedral , how would she have known him? Could she be buried within Downpatrick cathedral? [I note the cathedral graveyard was overcrowded by middle 1850s, so one of the other Downpatrick C of I graveyards might have been used. Perhaps the H.M.18th Irish Regiment history has clues of where their barracks and campaigns had been. It took some time to finalise the will  You have seen the full will, are there no wishes in the will as to where she wanted buried?  The major died at Parkhurst, has this any significance?

Other items picked up in a trawl for Cornes
Griffiths valuation say 1860 lists Cornes Hugh Campsie Cappagh Tyrone.
Ulster Covenant 1912 has Cornes A N of 1 Sth James Street Belfast Down: North Holywood Cultra Manor Farm{this farm may be Ulster Folk Museum who might know something. Another signatory was Jamison Margaret 55 Ballymagee Street  Down: North Bangor
Street directory 1907  in www.lennonwylie.co.uk/PT19072.htm#BANGOR
Jamison, John, 55 Ballymagee Street

As Cornes is such a rare surname in Ireland and the opposite in England, I looked for AN Cornes above
www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl Births Sep 1889   Cornes  Alfred Neville     Nantwich  8a 351 ie he would be 5 in 1894, and 23 in 1912 . I think he is a red herring unless his parents connected in some way to Ireland etc
then I looked for the death of a Margaret Cornes in England, however I should have been looking at burials if there is such a searchable record. Cornes and Nantwich seem strongly connected, has a history of Nantwich any clues
however the free bnds earliest listed is   Births Mar 1838   Cornes  John    Nantwich
I looked again at Ros Davies co Down website
Alexander CORNES . Knockbreda regd. Ballymacarrett; husband of Agnes Scott; father of Janet Houiston Cornes b. 4 Jan 1869 CR
Miss Ann CORNS . Bangor wife of John Lightbody; mother of Jane b. 1869 CR

I looked for tombstones but didn’t find an entry for Cornes, the Ulster Historical foundation may have something, Downpatrick cathedral’s have been listed and published by them in Vol 7

Hope something in this lot is new to you, good luck, Jim

Hi Jim
Thanks for reply
Heres what we found for the Dean:
This is from info on the Abbey church
The Revd. Edward Maguire, D.D. (afterwards Dean of Down) became Incumbent in 1876, and soon realised the necessity of building a new church to accommodate the church population of Bangor.
The foundation stone of this church (St. Comgall's) was laid in 1880, and it was completed in 1899. In 1882 the new church became the Parish Church of Bangor, and for a number of years the Abbey was forsaken.

Does that help work out which graveyard?? it would be

Her husband JOhn's will makes no mention of Margaret and leaves her nothing, in 1861 census he was with another woman, we can't sort out that connection???

JOhn Cornes was born Wellington, Shropshire.
Their children were born all over as the army moved.

My GGGfather CLEMENT AUGUSTUS CORNES 1844 in Belfast, but we can find no army records to confirm, just his later certs.

Interesting that they married in Gibraltar 1834, so we think that the GRAHAMS must have been an army family as well, but Margaret obviously had some roots back to Ireland. Have had researchers look for pensions for Margaret to track her whereabouts but no success.

Haven't seen those othr street directory entries so will go and look at those, thankyou.

Must look at the Alexander Cornes, as you say given the name unusual that there is another nearby.

Thankyou
Althea

There are several cemeteries that the Rev Maguire might have been able to bury people in the 1890’s eg
from History from Tombstones website
Bangor Abbey   Co Down      Map ref J501811
Bangor CI   Co Down   Church of Ireland   Map ref J505817

Also in Bangor are two general cemeteries, the older one is at 62 Newtownards Road, Bangor, Co Down. BT20 4DN    You can see an aerial view using google search engine for postcode plus ‘map’ heading. An index is kept of the names of either the plot owner or the deceased somewhere.  The office has closed down , but I think the records are kept at the newer one.  As it happens I am having my family’s tombstone cleaned up in this graveyard. I think it is supervised from the newer graveyard that is further south west if my memory is ok. At his stage it would be best if I leave my contact till last.

from North Down borough council
North Down Borough Council own Clandeboye and Bangor Cemetery in Bangor,
Contact North Down Borough Council Town Hall The Castle Bangor
Tel: +44 (0)28 9127 0371 I think you will be put through to the newer cemetry
Fax: +44 (0)28 9127 1370   downloadable Enquiry Form available.

My old note for County Down graveyards –colour photographs
Bangor, Donaghadee, Greyabbey, Millisle
Browsing I stumbled across a large colour photographic gallery of indexed tombstones in some Co Down graveyards, at the North of Ireland Family History Society (NIFHS) Charity number XR22524 ie www.nifhs.org/ I found it easy to check their Members interests in case someone else was already researching my line!  More importantly for many I then discovered under the section Members websites is an entry for Cardwell and Leckey Families with its own website www.codown.co.uk  he has another website www.yorick.plus.com/ulsterimages.  I investigated just the first one., Bill Cardwell’s copyrighted photographic work covers the not just for his family surname interests but  in that noble role of a supplier of information for free, he probably has a colour photograph for what looks like most tombstones in each graveyard. It’s an excellent piece of work. He covers
County Down Memorials:  Millisle Presbyterian; Templepatrick graveyard, Donaghadee; Abbey Church, Bangor; Whitechurch graveyard, Ballywalter; Donaghadee Parish Ballycopeland graveyard, Millisle; Greyabbey graveyard
County Tyrone Memorials: Killyman Parish Albany Presbyterian; St. Brigid's RC, Killyman
While mentioning NIFHS website, its easy to check their Members interests in case someone else is already researching your line!

North of Ireland Family History Society  have you checked their special search engine forfamily history.
In summary its either the Abbey, St Comgalls or 62 Newtownards Rd, Bangor.

Could margaret Jamison be a Graham??
must rush, Jim
