Trying to find Mary Ann Wholey
« on: Saturday 04 October 08 23:04 BST (UK) »
I have recently discovered that my great aunt Mary Ann Wholey (nee Clarke) went to Canada with her husband Robert in 1912 aboard the Royal George. ( I believe this information came from FindMyPast) Ancestry has her returning to De la Rouche Street Montreal in 1924, having been to see a Mr Rennie (her son from her first marriage) in Walthamstowe England. she is also shown as repeating that journey in 1930.

My mother remembers her mother as having a cousin/aunt Polly in Canada & I am trying to find out who she was.

Mary was born in 1849 in Great Ellingham Norfolk, England & would have been 81 when she returned to Canada in 1930. I am interested in finding her death & also seeing if either of her other sons were in Canada as well. I have found a possible Ernest John Rennie arriving aboard the Canada 29/6/1907 and would be interested to se if he shows on the Canadian census, which might show if he is the right one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i have no experience of Canadian records.

Thanks

Hi Lynn

Looks like Ernest John RENNIE is a son.....an unmarried labourer, b 1881
Check WW1 Attestation here - Canadian Soldiers
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/index-e.html
I think the NOK is written as  C WHOLEY RENNIE
(and amended address for NOK is ...1977A De la Roche, Montreal)

Cheers

Wow Ambly, that is brilliant! It fits with everything I already know, as his birth is registered Dec qtr 1881. I shall have to check the CWGC to make sure he survived.  :)

Hello Lynn :),

Is Walter Valentine Rennie by any chance the third son?

Montreal Directories are on line. Click Serie Principale and the rest will be in English.... a random peak found Robert Wholey in 1920 but all years are on line .....

http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html

Here is a link for Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal ... it looks like family members are listed in the index ..... click Products and Services, then Genealogy Research .....

http://www.mountroyalcem.com/

Hope these links are going to work (they are my first attempt at making them)

Hi again,

Walter Valentine being correct ...... this might be Walter and family on the 1911 Canadian Census from automatedgenealogy.com (a free online resource). The daughter is indexed as Roby but to me the last three letters look like 'oly' and the first letter could well be a badly written 'P'; the enumerators writing is not the neatest. So could be your Polly?

http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=2203

This family emigrated in 1905 and had a child after their arrival. My ancestry.ca is lapsed at the moment but if you have access to either ancestry.com or ancestry library addition (I think both have the records) you should be able to find a baptism for Frederick (civil registration in Quebec did not start until the 1990's or thereabouts), marriages for the children, and burial records in the Drouin Collection. These records are from Parish Registers and come with images. Coverage is up to about 1941. Death dates from Mount Royal Cemetery will be a big help. Barring that, a request in 'Lookups' will turn up someone with access. You should probabbly link this thread in if you do so.

Hope this is them :).

That is fantastic Polar bear, that is certainly the right one. I have them in 1901, living in Hackney. I think the children's dobs aren't quite right though, as they didn't have Charles in 1901, he is age is down as 10, but birth date is transcribed as 1900. You could well be right about Poly, it doesn't look like Roby to me, I will have to see if I can find a birth for her in England

Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help & it looks like I might have rellies still in Canada

I have been in contact with a cousin, who agrees that Aunt Polly probably was Mary Ann. I have also found Mary Ann arriving in England in 1920 & 1930, thanks to Ancestry's new passenger lists.
