Broxted Parish - Marriage record
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 19:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find a Marriage record for Broxted Parish in Essex.  James Hartgroves (of High Roding/ Roothing) to Rebecca Baker of Broxted.

I believe Rebecca was born abt 1795 and the marriage would possibly have been around 1810 to 1816 as their first child Thomas was born in Broxted about 1816.

Many thanks

I am a direct descendant. It is Hartgrove by the way but there are variants..James came from Willingale Doe Essex and married Rebecca Baker in Broxted. The Essex Record Office does have fiche of various Parish Registers but I have not looked yet. There is a trail of them on the Mormon Family website...I won't list it here but they had a Thomas Hartgrove and possibly a Daniel Hartgrove and many others but eventually another Thomas Hartgrove descendant of James and Rebecca married Esther Ayrner and they had a son called Thomas Hartgrove and like so many others was born in Willingale Doe Essex in 1836. Daniel Hartgrove married Mary Ann (?) from Matching Green near Harlow and they moved to Toot Hill Stanford Rivers Essex. Their cottage still stands as the end one opposite the Green Man pub....Daniel Hartgrove and his wife Mary Ann Hartgrove were higglers or poultry dealers with a stall in Romford market Essex...So far I think they had sons Thomas William, David and Charles and a daughter Annie Hartgrove born in 1861 Stanford Rivers. This is my Gt Grandmother who died in Walthamstow then Essex in August 1949 and is buried along with her Grandaughter Lilian Beatrice Fryer (1917-33) in Queens Road Cemetery...Annie Hartgrove married George Southgate from Witnesham Suffolk four miles from Ipswich. George was a blacksmith in Epping Essex and died aged 36 in 1892 but completed the 1891 census showing a son Harry (George Harry Southgate)..Daughter Rosie, Daughter Florence Mary Ann, Daughter Daisy (9 months) and wife Annie nee Hartgrove..Her mother Mary Ann Hartgrove died in 1910 and Daniel Hartgrove died in Stanford Rivers in 1912. He is buried in St Margaret's Stanford Rivers but the Register is damaged and incomplete...Annie Southgate nee Hartgrove married in the early 1890s in Chelmsford Essex Ernest William Hobbs who in 1901 was 38 and came born in Tunbridge Wells. By then there were two more kids Herbert William Hobbs and Lily Hobbs who had Annie Southgate (nee Hartgrove) later Mrs Hobbs as their mother. George Harry Southgate and his wife Lily had a son who became Air Vice Marshall Southgate RAF CB and who is now aged 90 and not well. I am in touch. The parents of George Southgate may have been James and Emma Southgate and their is allegedly a brother John and an Arthur. If you can e-mail me in some way I can e-mail you some photos and paperwork Regards....PS It was Rose Southgate daughter of George and Annie who became my Grandmother and had my mother but Rose become Mrs Jack Fryer. You can Google Walthamstow Memories and my piece "Essex Boy"

Error. Thomas Hartgrove married Esther Ayrner and they had my Great Great Grandfather Daniel Hartgrove born 1835-36 Willingale Doe Essex. He then married Mary Ann(?) from Matching Green Essex and they set up as poultry dealers in Stanford Rivers....

There was and remains a colony of people called Hartgrove in Toot Hill Stanford Rivers before Daniel Hartgrove moved there with wife Mary Ann. (So he may have been amongst relatives)
