Surname Tarffard
« on: Monday 06 October 08 12:57 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the parents of my great, grt grandmother Ann Hall Tarffard.
She was born in Holland Fen sometime around 1834. In the 1850`s she moves to Lambeth.

She marries William Hall in July 1857.

She states on her marriage certificate that her father is William Tarffard a machinist.

I have tried searching for any records regarding this man but can come up with nothing, not even an origin of the surname. Can anyone tell me if it is a Lincolnshire name?

Thanks to rootschatters looking up the 1861 census I have discovered she had a sister called Sarah Hall living with her in Lambeth.

I suspect that she was born Ann Hall and that her mother was living with William Tarffard (cannot find any trace of a marriage to a Tarffard) and that her father was actually Hall.

Any suggestions on where i can go from here.

Many thanks
Sarah

I'm sure TARFFARD isn't a real name, in Lincs or anywhere else.

I would imagine she was the Anne TRAFFORD, bap Holland Fen 26 May 1833, dau of Mary.

Perhaps her father was called  William HALL or perhaps she had no idea who he was.

Surely, if all of the household in 1861 were HALL, they were William's sisters. ???  In fact it doesn't say that Sarah was related to anyone.

Thank you for that,

Seems strange that it is so clear on the marriage certificate as Tarffard.

The census that you so kindly posted are for her husbands family William Hall.

On her childrens birth certificates she is listed as Ann Hall  formerly Hall but on the marriage certificate she is Ann Hall Tarffard. It seems strange to invent a surname. Though as she was married in London I suppose that the vicar could have misunderstood her when she gave her fathers name?

You kindly suggest she was  baptised 26 May 1833, dau of Mary. Could you tell me where you got this record?

Thanks again
Sarah

That's in the IGI at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

I presume the certificate is from Southport in which case it may be a second or third transciption away from the original register.  Perhaps the original register (or an intermediate transcription) was unclear and the name had to be guessed.

I've just found some HABERGEONs (or similar) attached to my tree in the Boston area.

Thanks for that.  Lincolnshire folk are very friendly i`ve  found. Has come as a surprise to me that my ancestors are from Lincolnshire as we always thought we were southerners.

Regards and good luck with the hunt.
