Marriage of Peter Mann 1860 - 1864
« on: Monday 06 October 08 15:26 BST (UK) »
Hi, just found this site.
Can anyone help me?

I'm looking for a marriage of a Peter Mann born about 1838 to a Mary ?
Mary was born in Jersey about 1844, and Peter in Bavaria. They had their first child in Plymouth in 1864. They did not marry in England, so it must have been in Jersey, but without Mary's surname or an idea of which part of Jersey, I am unsure how to find them.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Chris

Hi Chris

I've searched the index and I'm afraid there is no marriage for a Peter Mann.

Thanks to both of you for your help. I think I will get one of their children's birth certificates, as suggested. I am going to send off for Eliza Mann 1881, because she is the direct ancestor of my wife.
William Henry Mann 1864 was their first child.
I'm thinking that maybe they married in Plymouth, but they did not register, possibly because it was a non anglican wedding. I'm sure I heard somewhere that registration wasn't properly enforced until the 1860's.
As Peter Mann was a German immigrant, I thought maybe he might be Jewish.
Peter did have his own business as a shopkeeper, and I know the Jewish community at that time were very business minded.
Maybe when I get the maiden name, there maybe some chance of finding out more about Mary's Jersey family!

Thanks again, you've saved me time and money!

contray to popular belief it was a legal requirement to register all marriages (births and detahs)  beit of whatever faith the parties were.
