Can someone please do a look-up on the 1891 census in the Cowbridge area for Walter Kelland, born c.1870, Tiverton, Devon.

Thanks

Hi Roy

I can only find a Robert Kelland, b.c. 1871,  Devon  in Cowbridge. I'll give it, just in case:

Aberthau or Aberthan Farm, St Athan, Bridgend and Cowbridge
RG12/4453 F 52 P 12

John Darby,widr, 60, Farm Bailiff, b. Devonshire
Martha Butt, wid, 56, House Keeper, b. Somerset
Jane Davies, serv,s, 17, domestic servant, b. Glamorgan
William Morgan, serv, s, 26, Farm Servant, b. Gloucestershire
Thomas White, serv, s, 21, Farm Servant, b. Somerset
Robert Kelland, serv, s, 20,  Farm Servant, b. Devonshire

The only Walter Kellands coming up are all in Devon but not with that birthdate or place. . I see a Walter J Kelland b. Tiverton circa 1870 on the 1871 and 1881 in Devon but he's not there on the 1891.

Hi Gadget

Walter Kelland retired from the police force in December 1925.  A newspaper article covering the event stated:

"PC Kelland came to South Wales in 1891 and for a time worked on farms in the Cowbridge district.  In 1892 he joined the police force in St Athan and his first post was at Bridgend."

The Robert Kelland you found age 20 at Aberthaw Farm, St Athan is his younger brother.  Both Walter and Robert aged 11 years and 10 years respectively are on the 1881 at home with father Robert in Devon. The Walter J. Kelland you referred to b. Tiverton, Devon is the Walter I am tracking.

With his young brother residing in St Athan it would seem Walter was there somewhere, maybe not on the same farm, but somewhere in Glamorgan.  'Where are you Walter?'

If you don't mind I would be interested in the 1871 data on the Kelland family in Devon.

Regards
Roy

Hi Roy

I noticed a separate Robert birth later!

Here they are in 1871

Rull or Kull Farm House, Thorverton
RG10/2166 Folio 21 Page 9

Robert Kelland, 29, Dairyman, b. Cruwys Marchard
Ellen, 24, b. Sandford
Walter John, 1, b. Tiverton
Robert, 1 month, b. Thorverton
John Stoneman, visitor,14, b. Cheriton Fitz Paine

This family is in Cadleigh on the 1891 with a large family but without Walter and Robert. Do you have them?

I've done some wide searches for Walter on the 1891 - using two different sources in case he was missed from one of them.  This included just a search on Walter, b. Devon 1870 +/-2.  So far, nothing in Eng or Wales  :-\

Added - no sign of anyone like him  in the 13 pages of St Athan. Now going through the 47 pages of Cowbridge

Hi Roy

I've now checked through all the entries for Cowbridge and there is no one remotely like your Walter there.

He could be in one of a few areas but miswritten in some way. This takes a considerable time to check and I'm afraid I my eyes won't take the searching on this scale.

Sorry

Hi Gadget
Many many thanks for endeavouring to find the elusive Walter.  It would seem he is in Glamorgan somewhere but....................where!!!!!

I located the marriage of Robert Kelland to Ellen Stoneman in the March Qtr 1868.  Could I ask you to do a look-up on the 1851 census for Robert & Ellen who hopefully will be with their respective parents.

Thanks for all your help
Roy

Hi Roy, I found my elusive Kelland after loads of searching  when someone spotted that an enumerator had written the surname but the looped e was mistaken for an i by ancestry on the census reading Killand. My George Kelland came to Newport and i now have them back to the late 1500,s.
