I would really appreciate some help with finding John Bailey COLES, born about 1781, and his wife Sarah (nee ATKINS) in 1841, 1851 or 1861.

Many thanks for this. Was John on his own, or was Sarah with him at the time? If he ws alone, was he shown as Married or Widowed?

Were the Croke family from Wiltshire originally (i.e., could there be a family link?) or were they from Dorset?

John was down as a Widower...and all the other people on the page were from various parts of Dorset

Can you spot him in 1861? What does he give as his place of birth?

Many thanks for this. The age difference is too great for this family to be John's children, but it's possible that one or other of them (John or Sarah) was a Grandchild.  In any case, thanks so much for this lookup.

If you happen to find John and his wife Sarah in 18541, in either Dorset or Wiltshire, that would be excellent. But in the meantime, many thanks indeed for your help.

Hi again Phil,

I note at marriage John was listed as of Warminster.

Don't know if you have this one

Julianna COLES baptised 20 Jan 1818 Warminster parents John Baily COLES and Sarah

There is a John Bailey COLES listed at Heyesbury Prison 3 July 1832 (constable of Heytesbury)

I also note an earlier John Bayley COLES was buried 14 May 1806 Hill Deverill

Since this is where Theophilus is in 1841 surely a connection

there is also
Anna COLES buried there 9 Apr 1822 aged 28 years
and Joanna COLES 18 Nov 1828 aged 74 years

Would suspect this is Johns family

John Bailey COLES of Maiden Bradley = Joanna PONTING 22 Sep 1779 Downhead Somerset

John Bailey COLES was buried 1 Jan 1862 Horton Dorset aged 81 years

there is also a

Sarah COLES buried 28 Jan 1841 Horton aged 48 years

alas still no go in 1841 census
