Ideas please !!!
« on: Thursday 09 October 08 14:33 BST (UK) »
I wonder if any body can come up with reasons for the following puzzle.  My rellie Fanny Gillespie was born in 1860 her parents on  her birth certificate were Daniel and Fanny m.s. Gallocher they are her stated parents also her death certificate in 1917.  But on her marriage certificate they were John Gillespie and Fanny Gillespie m.s. Clark that was in 1882 in Airdrie  So you see the problem.  Why different parents. The 1861 and 1871 census confirm her father's name, but I think her birth mother died shortly after her birth, and her father re-married.  I can see that she put her step-mum's name instead of natural mother.

Hope you can clear it up for me.

Thanks.

P.S. To see all information look at my other post.

Just putting the link up to your other post to make it easier www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,332963.0.html

Why do you think that Fanny's mother, Fanny Gallacher had died shortly after her birth? She shows in the 1871 census entry that Falkryn posted.  There is also a death showing for a Frances Gallacher/Gillespie age 63 in JOHNSTONE AND ELDERSLIE, Renfrew in 1896 which is likely to be her mother and would be worthwhile you checking out on SP.

As to why Fanny but different names down for parents' names down in her marriage cert., no answers unfortunately. It's a pain when our ancestors did that but they did in some cases unfortunately  :-\

What was the occupation for her father 'John' in her MC, does it match Daniel's occupation? Do both parents show as alive or deceased at the time of her marriage?

Hi Monica,  on her marriage certificate her father 'John' was a coal miner and he was deceased, but the other 'Fanny' was alive.  Her real  dad Daniel occupation on her death certificate was put down as a railway surface man.   The reason behind my thinking that her mother was dead is the large difference in ages between the 61 and 71 census and the different places of birth, I know the ages could vary, Fanny's ages were 30 in 1851, 36 in 1861 and 48 in 1871 that's how I came up with the theory.

Thanks.

Some people's ages varied enormously between censuses, mostly down  ::) That death I found in 1896, if the right one, as you can see has a reported age of 63 in 1896.
