Original images of 1911 census?
« on: Friday 10 October 08 22:37 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to track down a g.g.uncle, and someone found a possible match for him in the 1911 Canadian census.  Can someone tell me if it's possible to see the original images from this census anywhere online, and what if any extra information they might contain?

The chap I'm looking for is Maurice Sutton, and the reference is 1911 / Ontario / Toronto East / 32 Toronto / page 7, I've seen the info on automatedimages so far.

Also, I believe he would have emigrated in or around 1896 (his mother reported his disappearance to the local police), but how can I go about finding out whether this is the case?  Ship's passenger lists?  He was in the workhouse in 1891 aged 7, so I don't know how likely it was that he'd have been able to pay his fare to emigrate.

Finally, is it possible to find out more about Robert Sutton, the 1911 Maurice's son?  EG would his birth cert (assuming it's Canadian) give father's birthplace/nationality etc?

Any help gratefully received!

Cate.

Hi Catylou,

The census website is actually automatedgenealogy.com.

If you go to the website and follow through with the info you have, the original image will be there for you. At the top you will find an arrow to increase the size of the image.

As Polarbear mentioned, you can view the original image online at automatedgenealogy.  Once you get to the table view, click on the link at the top of the page called "Split View".  This will redirect you to the page with the image.

The census returns list an immigration date of 1911.  Robert was born in England in 1905 so you can check Free BMD for some possible matches (there are quite a few and I'm not sure where in England the Suttons were from).

There is a possible match on findmypast for:

T.M Sutton, labourer
Mrs M Sutton, wife
Robt Sutton, child

They travelled on the Victorian from Liverpool to Montreal, departed on 12 May 1911.

Ah, thanks for that - I'll go and have another look at automatedgenealogy then, I assumed I could only get the transcript from the site as there didn't seem to be any obvious way of getting the image.

My Maurice was from the Tewkesbury/Forthampton area of Gloucestershire - he was in the workhouse in Tewkesbury in 1891 and I'm trying to work out if this one that pops up in Canada could be the same man.  I was told he went/was taken to the US, but I don't know when

The Ancestry info, is it from the .com site?  I only have a sub for the .co.uk, so it might be time to upgrade my membership, or at least try and find a free trial on it for a couple of weeks!  ;D

Hello again :),

If you are referring to the census....yes, it can be found at ancestry.com BUT it is free at automatedgenealogy.com.

Before upgrading your ancestry sub you might want to check with your local library to see if they have ancestry library edition which also has the Canadian records.

Hi Polarbear,

Thanks for that - a good reminder!  My local library is closed till the end of the month for getting a new roof, but there's a couple of others nearby I could visit and find out.

Cheers,

Cate.
