Canada 1904 - Edwin SIDDALL & Family
« on: Saturday 11 October 08 13:38 BST (UK) »
Leading on from my last successful post, I have on the 1930 passenger list Brooks WALTON going to an uncle Mr Henry SIDDALL in Saskatchewan.  I have looked on the 1911 census and found a SIDDALL family in the right area and the information says that they arrived in 1904 from England.

Please could someone see if they are on the passenger lists?  Family is
Edwin SIDDALL born 1867
Annie Elizabeth SIDDALL born 1867
Plus children Harry (could be the Henry I'm looking for), Edward, Nellie and Thomas (who could have been born in Canada).

Thanks for any help with this,

Jean

There is an Edwin Siddall, age 26, miner, from Lancashire, destination Michel BC, travelling Steerage on the vessel 'Pretorian', arriving Montreal, Quebec 12 Sep 1903.

The age is about right to fit with the Edwin Siddall on the 1911 census so they might be one and the same.

And here is Annie Elizabeth, following on the next year.

Vessel - Dominion
Arrives Montreal Quebec on 14 Aug 1904
Ellen Siddall, 31, wife, mar
Charles Siddall, 9, child, single
Annie E Siddall, 33, wife, mar
Master H Siddall, 10, single
Master E Siddall, 4
Miss E Siddall, 2

Now I just need to find Thomas!
(I wonder where Ellen and her son Charles fit in?)

Nell,

Thank you again for all your help.  Does the passenger information give a contact in Canada or next of kin in England? Or where in England they were from?

I'm hoping that this is the Siddall family shown in Brooks Walton's passenger list entry but it is a bit tenuous and I can't find any connection between the UK families yet....  :)

Just came across your post of Oct 2008. I realize your posts are quite old and you may have discovered answers to your questions already.

Regarding Edwin Siddall & Family:

The family that has been given in the ship list came from Oldham Lancashire. Edwin and Annie, however, were born in 1877. The children: Harry, Edward (possibly Edwin), Nellie, and Thomas were all born in England. Ella, born 2 Oct 1908 in Saskatchewan. I believe your Edwin Siddall did arrive 12 Oct 1903, with the rest of the family following the next year.

This family travelled with Edwin's brother, John William b. 1872 Oldham Lancashire. I have not been able to find John William's ship entry into Canada.

The ship list that contains Annie Elizabeth with Ellen and all the chldren is a combination of the two families. There seem to be some children missing and some mistakes as well.

The families are Ellen 31 married (Missing children - Elsie b. 1895, Richard b. 1903) married to John William, Edwin's brother.
Annie Elizabeth 33 married, married to Edwin Siddall, with children - H. (b 1897) (Harry in the 1911 Census but Henry in the 1906 Census) Charles (I don't know where he fits in -- he's not on the 1906 or 1911 Census) Master E (I'm assuming Edwin or Edward -- Edward is on the 1906 and 1911 Census -- but Edwin Siddall was born in 1900 in Oldham and an Edwin Siddall died in Southern Sakatchewan in 1912 being 12 years.) Miss E age 2 could be Nellie (on the 1906 and 1911 Census) Thomas doesn't appear on the ship list, but is listed in the 1906 and 1911 Census as born in England. Would have been an infant.

The 1916 census seems to have mistakes as well. The Edwin Siddall family is nowhere to be found as of yet. Yet, Annie is given as John's wife instead of Ellen. (John and Ellen's daughter, Elsie is my husband's grandmother.) Both families settled in southern Saskatchewan, near the towns of Weyburn and Estevan.

I have found some evidence in another ship record that Edwin Siddall returned to England in 1952 at age 75 with the last residence given as Canada, destination Oldham, Lancashire, so I assume he lived in Canada permanently. I have not done any extensive searching on the Edwin Siddall family - only as it relates to John William.

Hope this answers some of your questions and that I haven't bored you with too many details.

hi I am a canadian Siddall...I have my Siddall tree done back to 1772 up to present day...and it starts with Ralph Siddall the 1st, born abt 1742, who married Bridget Tate....they came over on teh ship called the "Duke of York..and sailed from Liverpool England March 16, 1772 took 46 days and landed in Halifax, NS, Canada...my Siddall's originally came from Hull, Yorkshire, England...Ive the list of passengers...for the ship "Albion" that they've also travelled on...I know also that we are missing some info in our tree...trying to pin point exactly where and who we are missing..but dont know where to start....I have added all the Siddall's that are on facebook...to see if there is a connection to the Siddalls in the UK and anywhere else overseas...which i've heard many times that all the Siddalls in the world are related eventually down the line...just not exactly sure where they fit in...lol. It is a very interesting tree to get into doing...believe in me, my head swims with the names, dates, and different info almost everyday...lol..i am workin on 8 different trees, and I love doing geneology...so based on what you have written here...i have many Edwins and/or Edwards in my tree...its just the matter of finding the right one...so if you think my info will help, I have my tree done on facebook, add me on facebook and ill invite you to view it.....

As this post is very old, you may not still be active on this website.  By chance, if you happen to be interested, I've found a series of digital Canadian Armed Forces records for Henry A. Siddall (born near Manchester), who set out from Roche Percee, Saskatchewan, to fight in various battles of the First World War.  These battles included most notably Vimy Ridge & Passchendaele (where he was killed in action).
