I don't think Martha was ever born
« on: Saturday 11 October 08 19:09 BST (UK) »
Martha Letch - parents, Thomas Letch and Phoebe ( Smith, I think).

In 1851, she is aged 5
In 1861 - 16
She married Henry Butler in 1865
In 1871 - 25 - born Braintree, Essex
in 1881 - 34

So, I have looked for her birth between 1843 and 1848. I can't find her anywhere and think maybe I am suffering from Martha blindness so am appealing for help.

If she wasn't registered immediately after her birth, maybe there is a baptism record which someone could look up for me.

Thank you,

Jen

Hi

Not all births were registered.  Although Civil Reg was introduced in 1837 - it only became compulsory to register births in 1874

Family finances played a part in whether or not a birth was registered, as it cost (I think) a penny which many families did not have to spare

Well there you are! I hadn't seen that one - or if I did, I just ignored it!

I shall have a go at sending for that one but with the father's name as a reference point.

Thank you.

Jen
