Suicide in the 19th Century - KENT
« on: Sunday 12 October 08 10:11 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather and his brother both died by their own hand in 1901 and 1902. I cannot find any death certificates for both and wondered if any were issued as an inquest was held. It seems strange that the death wasn't registered just because it was suicide . The deaths were covered in the local paper and the local record office says their were inquests but no records available now.
The details are William James Ivory died August 1901 at Toville,  nr Maidstone in Kent (Drowned). his brother was Benjamin Ivory died January 1902 in Faversham (Drowned).

Regards

Jason

thats strange indeed.

I know of no exceptions to the law on registering a death - OK, an Inquest might delay it a few months but .....  I looked for just christian names in case of mis-trans etc, but nothing for a year past the dates you mention ..

Hi Jason

Freebmd has a death registration for William James Ivory in Oct-Dec 1902 in Kent: the GRO reference is Milton 2a 568.

I have not found Benjamin between June 1901 and Dec 1910 on Freebmd.

All the best

Took his age from 1881 census when Benjamin is only 2...... cannot see him in 1901

Is there any possibility that these were counted as deaths at sea?  Not something I know about, but I think the indexes are separate.
