Completed - Warner Philadelphia
« on: Sunday 12 October 08 11:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to trace a group of my family. So far I know that three daughters of Isaac Warner (c1789 - Loughborough Leicestershire England) are on the passenger list for the Susquehanna arriving in Philadelphia 31/12/1844 or 1/1/1845.

The 1850 census for Germantown Philadelphia has Isaac living with daughter Sarah (c1831 Leicester England).

Isaac was a Framesmith/Mechanic in the UK in both the Lace and Hosiery trades and he was a member the the Particular Baptist Church.

I would like to try to find Isaac's death date/information as well as possible marriages for

Eliza Warner (b1818 Devon or Leicester England)
Selina Warner (c1826 Paris France)
Sarah Warner (c1831 Leicester England)

I am not very familiar with American sources of information and I am struggling to find anything else for this family group after 1850.

Any help or pointers to sources of information gratefully received.

Many thanks

Have you had a trawl through the PHiladelphia City DC's available through Family Search Labs?  There are a few names there and one is born abt 1791 died 1856 buried in the Odd Fellows Burying Ground.  Sadly no further identifying details.

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1320976;p=2;t=searchable

They also have Marriage license indexes but they probably start too late (1885) to pick up any of the daughters...unless they married for a second time or waited until late in life.

Hi Jean,

Thanks so much for this, I think it is very likely the right person. It would explain why he doesn't appear in the 1856 and 1858 Philadelphia Directories. Conincidentally my family has known connections with the Odd Fellows in the UK, I think this might be significant that he is buried in their burial ground.

Can you tell me what the death note says after "aged Sixty Five"? I cannot make it out.

Thanks for these links. I did not know of Search Labs before your message. I think two of the daughters Sarah and Eliza are possibly listed in the 1856/58 directories. So I can follow this a little bit further I think.

Many thanks - Framesmiths1816

Glad you've found the link helpful.  It's been a great help to me before too.

As for what the writing is after age sixty-five.....well.... ::) I was hoping you wouldn't ask that!  ;D  I can't seem to make any sense of it either....it appears to have two dates written in the style of a trailing raised "th" but I can't seem to make any sensible words or abbreviations out of the rest.  It figures since a physician wrote it!!!!

Hopefully more eyes can take a peek and see if they have any further clues...

Best wishes
Jean

HI Jean,

I think the first part is possibly a name  "Miss ????? Warner". It could be his daughters Sarah or Eliza maybe?

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks - Framesmiths1816

The Philadelphia death notice says after aged sixty-five years:  "Residence Wood St? 4th door below? 20th St?. Questions marks indicate where I had trouble reading. I looked at the image for several minutes and zoomed in. I think it's right, but....

Wood Street runs east to west in Philadelphia. It begins at the Delaware River and ends at 20th St.

From ODD FELLOWS' CEMETERY COMPANY website
http://www.cemeteryco.com/index.htm      Read the FAQ.

From the History link on the website:
The Odd Fellows Cemetery Co. of Philadelphia was incorporated in 1848 by an Act of the Pennsylvania Legislature, when the population of Philadelphia was only 400,000. The original Odd Fellows' Cemetery was located on Diamond Street, between 23rd and 24th Streets. In 1865, due to the growth of the city, grounds for a second cemetery were purchased from an estate named "Mount Peace," situated at what is now 31st Street and Lehigh Avenue, extending north to Hunting Park Avenue and Clearfield Street. The cemetery took its name from the estate from which it was purchased, and today occupies a 50-acre tract.

You should read this too:

Google Maps shows apartment buildings on the blocks where the first cemetery was located.

Hi John,

Ah yes, that makes far more sense than anything I was coming up with.

I have seen the two links last night and I must admit to being quite upset by the blogspot one. I have spent a lot of time looking into my ancestor Isaac, he is my 4xG grandfather and I have his name. He played a significant role in the development of machine made lace and hosiery in England and France and he knew many famous and influential people of the industrial revolution. Isn't it typical of the modern world that the last resting place of so many people should be treated so casually. The suggestion of official corruption with regard to the re-development of the site combined with the discovery of bodies that had not been moved, found in 1999, does not surprise me. It just adds to my cynicism about the 'modern'world.

The cemetery.co.com link FAQ's puzzle me as the questions are there, but where are the answers? I have email'd to ask if they know where his body is now but my guess that, if it was moved, it would have been dumped into some mass grave with thousands of others.

I wonder if anyone knows of any photographs of the Odd Fellows burial ground before it was built on?

Any idea what the word at the bottom left is, before the date?

Thanks for your help - Framesmiths1816

Hi Framesmiths1816: The word before the date on the death notice is Philadelphia, spelled "Philadel" and with the last part of the name scribbled above the line. You can zoom in on the certificate if you want to confirm my reading.
