Llan-y-Pwll Nr Wrexham - where is nearest church?
« on: Monday 13 October 08 19:24 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone from Wrexham can help?  I have a family all born at Llan-y-Pwll, near Wrexham (1813-1826) Does anyone know what church they would have been most likely to be christened at? I presume the nearest one would have been in Wrexham, but I'm not sure.

Thanks.

Helen

Of course Wrexham St Giles may well have been the favoured option for Baptism, but given its location you would also have to consider Gresford Parish,Holt Parish and also Isycoed Parish. The thought occurs to me also that they would choose none of these if they were Non Conformist!

Thanks both for your replies - very useful. One of my family (John Edwards) subsequently married at St Mary's in Chester, so hopefully that means he wasn't a non-conformist to start with  :)

Many thanks again

Helen

Hi Paul

Thanks very much - that's very kind of you.

The family as I have it at the moment is:

William Edwards b 1813 Sadler (not sure if he IS a sibling, as he's a lot older, but he lives next door to Edward, in 1861 for example)
Edward Edwards b 1821 Tailor and Farmer
John Edwards b 1821 Blacksmith
Thomas Edwards b 1826 Blacksmith

All were born in Llan-y-Pwll. From census returns their mother is Hannah Edwards, born 1785 in Erbistock. I'm not sure of her husband's name - there's a Hannah and Thomas Edwards in 1841 in Denbigh - he's a shopkeeper. Then in 1851 Hannah now a widow, is a shopkeeper in Bieston, but I don't know if the 1841 couple are definitely my Hannah and husband. I can't really see that they would be living in Denbigh....

I am especially interested in John Edwards, my greatx3 grandfather. He's a patient in Chester Infirmary in 1851 aged 30, but I haven't found him before or after,  and I think his wife Sarah (Foxley) died in 1850. They had 2 children, Hannah b 1844 (my greatx2 grandmother) and Edward b 1847 in Chester. From census returns, the children appear to have been brought up by their grandmother (1851 - Edward, I think Hannah was staying with friends in Chester ), and uncle Edward (1861 - Edward & Hannah, 1871- Edward) and so I think John must have died too. In 1871 Edward jnr is running Llan-y-Pwll farm with his uncle Edward.

If you are able to unearth anything I would be really grateful.

Thanks again,

Helen

Hi Helen, I thought I might give you something to think about :P
In Wrexham baptisms I found.
June 17 1820 Edward s/o Maurice & Hannah Edwards. abode Bieston. Fathers, Occ, Smith.
March 2 1826 Thomas s/o Morris & Hannah Edwards. abode, Llan y pwll. Fathers Occ, Smith.
I couldn't see a John Edwards, mother Hannah :(

Are you sure your John is part of this family?

Something else I'm not sure about :o on the 51 & 61 census Edward Edwards is a Tailor, on the 71 he's a farmer. Is it the same Edward :-\

The good news is :) if it is your family.
Erbistock marriage Nov 5 1807.
Morris Edwards. of Overton
Hannah Jones. of Erbistock
Witnesses. John Oldfield & Will'am Jones.

Is this Hannah's Sister? Erbistock marriage. Aug 29 1807.
Hugh Hughes(X) of Overton.
Elizabeth Jones. of Erbistock.
Witnesses. Elizabeth Davies & Morris Edwards.
(X)=Did not sign made mark.

Paul.

Hi Paul

Thanks very much for all of this :) I'm really grateful!

I DO think that John is part of the family because his 2 children Hannah and Edward are described as "niece" and "nephew" when they're living with brother Edward in 1861. Also in 1851 Edward jnr is living with grandmother Hannah plus uncles  Thomas and Edward (however his age has been wrongly transcribed as 14 when it should be 4). The John Edwards in Chester Infirmary in 1851 is a blacksmith born in Llan-y-Pwll. I have a copy of Hannah jnr's birth cert which says her father is John, blacksmith, as does her marriage cert. Also the fact that the children are called Hannah and Edward....  Maybe John was adopted into the family or something?  Or wasn't christened? I don't know!

Re Edward snr in the 51 and 61 census returns - I think it is the same person as Edward jnr born in Chester, is living with him on both occasions.

Thanks again, ever so much, for all the info on Hannah and Maurice - I'm very grateful :)

Best regards

Helen
