Shaw & Huntington marriage
« on: Thursday 16 October 08 21:45 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information regarding the marriage of my gggrandparents  John Thomas Shaw b. abt 1835 in Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire and Mary Huntington, b. abt 1836, in Curthwaite, Cumberland.   For the census of 1861 they were listed as:

Abbey St., Carlisle
John Shaw 25, Gas Fitter, Bolton le Moors
Mary 24 Curthwaite

I have family info for the census of 71, 81, 91, 1901- just no marriage info.

I have found nothing on Free BMD or Gretna Green.  I don't have enough  information to search further.  I still am unsure as to who his parents were.  Hers were Thomas Huntington and Isabella Hewitt.

Any help appreciated.

If you don't have the marriage cert how do you know her maiden name?  Do you have a child's birth cert?

There is a possible marriage in June Q 1855 which is confirmed on the Lancs BMD site that these two did actually marry each other.

Mary HINTON
John SHORE
Rochdale 8e 24

According to the Lancs site they married at Rochdale, St Chad

Rochdale is approx. 18 miles from Bolton, the names could just have been misheard and if they were illiterate they'd not realise.  This however is always dependant on being sure of her maiden name.  The marriage cert will give fathers name but census searches should help prove or disprove whether these two are on as well as yours.  Unfortunately I don't have access to census' at the moment.

In the 1871 census they had a boarder named Thomas Huntington.  There was a birth for Thomas Huntington and Mary Huntington to Thomas and Isabella Huntington.  Also a christening for a Thomas Hewitt Huntington to Thomas and Isabella.  Also the 1851 census.  My great (and great)  Uncles name is Joseph Hewitt Shaw.    Thomas Shore and Mary Hinton I do not believe are the right connection.  Thanks, though for searching.

The John and Mary there I think may just be mistranscribed I'm not saying they are a different couple, many simpler names have been mangled far worse that Huntington to Hinton

John SHORE

This couple can be found in Rochdale in 1861.  John has changed wives since 1851, his first wife (Alice) seemingly having died in 1854 ... so it's not the right couple. :(
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Me neither, as lodger is usually just that...lodger.... otherwise it would be brother in law.

As the Hinton/Shore marriage has been ruled out and there is absolutely no trace of a Shaw/Huntington marriage maybe it's time to look for a different Mary.

It could be just a large coincidence that she is the same age as his sister Mary, and Hewitt is not that uncommon a name.
