emma jayne payne/pain.
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 12:52 BST (UK) »
ive been trying for ages to trace the ancesrors of my great grandmother emma jayne payne,so far only with limited success.i know she was born in whitstable, kent on 21st november 1885,she had a sister lucy and a brother james.her birth certificate gives her mother as sarah amelia pain born whitstable 1870,making her just 15 when my great grandmother was born,no father is listed.sarah amelias mother was susannah sarah pain, living in whitstable in 1870,signature is a cross, again no father listed.sarah, emma, lucy and james are on the 1901,sarahs a charwoman.next door is thomas w warner b1834,whitstable and louisa e payne(louisa e warner)b1855,margate.on 1891 louisas head of household with sarah amelia, niece and emma jane and lucy(louisa) great nieces.thomas warner is also there.theres other census stuff, but it becomes quite confusing,if anyone thinks they can help, ill give it.apparantly my great grandmother was quite gypsy like in her ways, always selling something, especially vegetables, which shed sell in the street.she went hop picking every year, and despite living just 6 miles from the hop field, would sleep for the month on a straw mattress in a tin hut,and would cook all her food in an iron pot on a tripod over the fire.things like meat pudding wrapped in cloth, stew and potatoes chucked straight on the fire.she was friendly with a family called ripley,i believe the ladies nickname was N-word.emma janes husband was nelson camburn,he was an oyster dredger.he has family connections to webb/rigden/gambrill families, the gambrills have connections to scamps, elizabeth gambrill married a gypsy called john gains, their daughter faith married sampson scamp.none of this proves anything, but theres a lot of circumstantial stuff that makes me wonder, also a lot of stuff missing i need to find.if anyone can help me with emmas family, whether she was a gypsy or not,id be very grateful.also if anyone knows of any other links between rigdens,,gambrills, webbs, scamps or any other whitstable gypsy/non gypsy families.regards.nel.

many thanks for the reply.i have emma janes birth certificate and it gives her mother as sarah amelia pain,no father listed.i have a contact on Genes Reunited who says shes seen emma janes marriage certificate to nelson and her father is given as john pain,a labourer.i cant find him on any census in the area.this would suggest that sarah amelias married name is pain, but the strange thing is,her mother is susannah sarah pain, born place unknown, again no father.did they both have partners called pain.the census entries you found for 1891 and 1901 is definatly them, not sure about the hadlow ones.the way its worded is confusing, but ive worked it out that louisa payne is sarah amelias aunt, louisas father thomas warner is sarah amelias grandfather.on 1881,louisa is married to thomas bennett, thomas warner is there,as is sarah warner b1870,whitstable.i cant find marriage record for them.on 1871,theres thomas warner b1834 whitstable, jane ??? born 1826,margate,cant find marriage, susannah b1852,kent(could be my susannah pain)louisa b 1854,kent,elizabeth b1857,whitstable and sarah b1870,whitstable.all i can find on 1861 is jane warman b1828 margate, elizabeth warner b1859 whitstable and lenny payne b1855 margate, lodging at a pub in whitstable.there the trail goes cold.theres a couple of thomas warners in whitstable on other entries, one ive discounted as he clashes with mine on 1871,the other i thought was possible, especially as he and most of his sons worked as marine store and general dealers, but i now think hes not the one either.i also have a possible link to a george pain who may have been an itinerant road or railway labourer.on his two census entries hes lodging away from his family.any help to fill in the gaps and help me trace any of them would be greatly appreciated,as no one on Genes Reunited or anywhere else has been able to help, many thanks, nel.
