Doughton or Dowton 1851 Aston
« on: Wednesday 02 February 05 00:41 GMT (UK) »
Could SKS please look for any Doughton's or Dowton's in Aston,Herts 1851.According to marriage and christianing records there should be at least two families living in Aston between 1830 and 1850 yet I can only find one person in the 1841,John Dowton living with his step brother Joseph White.
In particular I am looking for Ann Doughton who would be aged approx 65 and widowed. Both spellings of the name were used on various records.Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is turning out to be a nightmare. Thanks,Pete 8)

Sorry Pete. The nightmare continues. Couldn't even find one Doughton/Dowton in 1851.

Any other villages as possibilities?

Hi again David,The David,James and Mary you have quoted from the burial index are father and 2 of the children but as stepmother Ann did not die until 1858(Ann Dowton,June 1858 Hertford  3a 163)she should be in the area. Thanks again,Pete 8)

AlgarvePete,

Although I don't recognise the specific Dowton/Doughton names you have mentioned, I too am tracing the Aston Dowtons.

Just to let you know that 'my lot' had decamped to Enfield, Middx. by 1851.  My lot were Eziah/Iziah/Josiah b. Standon) (jury is out on which one it actually is) married to Sarah (b. Datchworth).  Children Joseph, Susanna and William - that I can find.

So you may find it beneficial to move your research South a bit, in case they moved together.

Hope it helps a bit.

Regards

KA

Thanks for the info,it is unlikely Ann moved very far as her death is recorded in Hertford 1858.Regards,Pete 8)
