Restore and date help please

Can anyone help restore this picture;  trying to get more detail of the uniform so that this can be identified in armed forces section.

I can't date the uniform but the card stock was popular from about mid 1860's to early 1880's,as this has rounded corners this would date it at least late 1870's.So to be on the safe side I would estimate 1878-82.He's carrying a sabre and also appears to have crossed sabre amulets so possibly a Cavalry Regt.

The person is the photo was born about 1859 so your dating would make him in his 20s. 

The photo is mounted on yellow card, there is a red line border around the photo.  Have checked the back of the photo but there is nothing visible.

This all looks very odd.In this photo he looks to be late 30's at least.If the yellowing is the original colour & the back is buff this could push it to the 1890's but I would expect to see the photographer's name at least.On closer inspection this looks like the photo has been stuck onto old card stock as the border is out of position.The photographer's name may be under the photo.

Very old card stock. That red line around the outside is an 1860s thing and never comes back again.

Was the photo taken in England?

Not sure where the photo was taken.  The photo paper is very thin and the card is really yellow and about 1mm thick.  According to my family ancestry he was born in 1859. Its all very odd!!

The brickwork looks English ( note the air brick).He seems to be on guard duty as he has a rifle & sabre & appears to be standing by a concrete sentry box.The ground is very rough so probably not a military establishment.Could be S.Africa. c.1900 pasted on old card stock.
