Hi all

Im looking for
Mary Shaw b abt1842 greasley/kimberley nottinghamshire in the 1861/1851 census
so i can find her parents
She married John morris b abt 1842 in 1861 in kimberley
The Samuel Cunnington in 1877

the artical i have about the first marriage reads
Oct 20 1861
John Morris age 19 Bachelor, coal miner, of kimberley; father John Morris Soldier; Mary Shaw age 19 spinster of kimberley; father Emanuel Fisher Frame-work knitter; Married in the parish church according to the rites and ceremonies of the established churc, by Banns by me, john hides, vicar.

this marriage was soleminized between us (both Signed) in the presence of us, john shaw, selina Shaw and john allenborough.

I have researched under all these names and as yet can not find anything.

Any help would be much appreciated

Hi Ross,

I can see a Mary Shaw, age 17, born Kimberley on the 1861 census for Bulwell. She has a sister Selina too. Do you have access to census? The reference is RG9/2441 44 17 (leave surname out)

How do you like Eastwood instead, Liz?  :D

They're in Derbyshire Ilkeston in 1841 - I can't for the life of me read the name of the 11 year old girl  ???

Well done - I was looking at HO107 871 7 for 1841, with a 2 yr old Priscilla Shaw, but parents looking like Joseph and Elizabeth so it wasnt tying up too well.

Now - why is Mary's father Emmanuel Fisher?

I reckon the enumerator started to write something, then wrote Alice over the top - so I would go for Alice - but not 100% sure!

I notice that mum is on her own here (widow or otherwise) so by the time Mary is born later Mr Shaw (if there ever was one) is way out of the picture.

I notive there are lots of Shaws on that 1841 page, her whole family must be around the area. - but are they her family, i.e she is single and the later title of "widow" is just for propietry, or are they a late husbands family? Maybe when more children started arriving after his death that prompted her move....

.... or maybe I have an over active imagination!

IGI has submitted entries for Selina and Priscilla's baptiems in Greasley, giving parents as William and Alice Shaw .... but only submitted so no idea where info came from.

(also a Mary Shaw at Greasley with mother Phyllis .... so not the same one)

I dont know why the article i have names her father as emanuel fisher, another one of lifes great misterys,
there does seem to be a bit of widowing going on in this family, mary shaw married again after john morris died

Wonder if this is her father

1841
Kimberley notts
George Fisher 30 Cott FWK
maria 25
Frances 1
Emmanuel 25 CottFWK
next door John Fisher 81 ag lab
Sarah 42
Thomas 37 Coal miner

HO107 857  5 7 22

Alice (mother) gives p.o.b. in 1861 as Cossall -which is a village just down the road from Kimberley
1851 Eastwood-which is just down the road from Kimberley

I also wondered if the witness at the marriage was John Attenborough -not Allenborough - I knew an Attenborough from Kimberley -who died a few years ago (in his 80's) and generations before him were (supposedly) from that area.

Also in the old writing it is known that  "i"s would be dotted -but the "t"s not crossed
