My most important brickwall - help please
« on: Friday 24 October 08 01:46 BST (UK) »
I've posted parts of this before but never had any success.  Hoping for fresh help.
This is one wall I would dearly love to get over.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dave

I'll post the basics below.

I'm looking to find the date of birth, place of birth, parents, siblings of James Forrest born circa 1750.

I have:
Death age 73 on 14 Feb 1824 in Camlachie, Glasgow (source OPR in Campsie FH centre).

Inventory of his estate 3 June 1831 on SP gives no clues.

Spouse: Janet Rochead (sometimes Agnes.  Rochead has various alternative spellings)

(Added - Janet's parents Andrew and Mary.  Makes me think James' father may be James or John - naming tradition)

Marriage unknown (recorded as 1826 on SP but this is erroneous and is the death of Janet)

Children:
James, b4 Apr 1781 Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire
Andrew b2 Nov 1782 Cumbernauld, Stirlingshire
John, b28 Nov 1784 Slamannan, Stirling
Mary, b15 Feb 1789 Cumbernauld, Scotland
Robert, b24 Apr 1791 Cumbernauld, Scotland
Janet, b18 Apr 1793 Slamannan
Elphinstone, b28 Apr 1798 Campsie, Stirlingshire
    * d.  10 Jul 1866
    * m. Young, Agnes, b1803
Matthew, b22 May 1801 Campsie, Stirlingshire
Malcolm, b.  Mar 1805 Campsie, Stirlingshire
    * m. Bruce, Isobel, b1809

I haven't found marriages or deaths for any of the children other than what I've mentioned above.

You can look at this part of my tree and most documents I have here:

Hello Dave,

...
I'm looking to find the date of birth, place of birth, parents, siblings of James Forrest born circa 1750.
That's quite a long way back so I guess it's entirely possible that you won't find anything.  :'(

Marriage unknown (recorded as 1826 on SP but this is erroneous and is the death of Janet)
Looking at your website, that's a strange page from the Kirkintilloch OPR.
It seems to be of events - mainly births/baptisms - between 1819 and 1846.  However, it also includes some deaths within that period and annotations re the births/baptisms and marriages/spouses of the people who died.

The headings of the columns are not showing on the image on your site but the entries in the columns for your Janet read:
Rochead/ Janet/ lawful daughter/ Andrew Rochead, Mary Smellie/ --/ 65 years/ James Forrest/ --/ 30 Jun 1826

I take this to mean that Janet ROCHEAD, age 65 years, lawful daughter of Andrew ROCHEAD & Mary SMELLIE, wife of James FORREST, died 30 Jun 1826.

A bit difficult for SP to index, especially as they don't have a category for OPR deaths ...

The IGI indexes it with the birth as 1761 and the death as 1826 but doesn't mention the spouse.

Regards,

JAP

Yes, I know.  :(  I refuse to concede yet.  Just not sure where else to look.

That's how I've interpreted it too.  I got in touch with SP and GROS asking whether it was possible to get an image with the top of the page.  Both acknowledged but I heard nothing more.  I'd like to see the document itself.

This being my main paternal line, I want to try and get this further back, more so than any of my other lines.

Dave - some Forrests for your records.

May or may not be any relation to yours, but . . . . . . . . never say never - eh?

(Details copied from your previous post)

James Forrest
Birth:       c1750
Married:   ?              *Janet (or Agnes) Rochead (sic) (daughter of Andrew & Mary Rochead nee Smellie)
Death:      14.02.1824    (OPR in Campsie FH Centre)

*Janet (or Agnes) Forrest (nee Rochead) died 30th June 1826 age 65 (so, born c1761) (K’tilloch OPR)

James,    b4 Apr 1781    Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire

Andrew    b2 Nov 1782    Cumbernauld, Stirlingshire

John (3) (4)   b28 Nov 1784 Slamannan, Stirling

Mary (1)    b15 Feb 1789 Cumbernauld, Scotland

Robert      b24 Apr 1791 Cumbernauld, Scotland

Janet (2)   b18 Apr 1793 Slamannan

Elphinstone,    b28 Apr 1798 Campsie, Stirlingshire
    * d.  10 Jul 1866
    * m. Young, Agnes, b1803

Matthew   b22 May 1801 Campsie, Stirlingshire

Malcolm   b ??  Mar 1805 Campsie, Stirlingshire
    * m. Bruce, Isobel, b1809

Stones in Campsie Churchyard (extracted from West Stirlingshire pre-1855 MI’s)

(1)    Mary Forrest (wife of William Calder)
   Daughter Jean Calder died 08.07.1843 age 15 [born c1828] (Ref: 340)

(2)   Jean Forrest (wife of John Brown)
   Daughter in law Margaret Brown (wife of son Malcolm Forrest) died 18.06.1939 age 21 [born c1818] (Ref: 366)

(3)    John Forrest [Miller at French Mill] (husband of Elizabeth Millar)
   John (I think) would have been the son of I. F. & I. W.
   Probably J. Forrest & J. (or) I. Forrest nee W…….? [Letters I & J seem to be interchangeable] (Ref: 645)
   There is a date of 1773 on this stone alongside the I. F. & I. W., which could mean a multitude of things

(4)    John Forrest [at French Mill] (husband of Margery Wilson) died 24.04.1863 age 93 [born c1770]
   Could this be the same John Forrest in (3) and Margery be his second wife?
   Their eldest son John Forrest died 30.05.1822 age 18 [born c1804] (Ref: 646)

   Charles Forrest [in French Mills] (husband of Helen Brown)   2 Stones side by side
   There is a date of 1842 on both stone which could mean a multitude of things
   Was this Charles a son of the above John Forrest? (Presuming the French Mills links them) (Ref: 650 & 651)

NO ROCHEAD (or any variant) STONES IN CAMPSIE CHURCHYARD

NO ROCHEAD (or any variant) OR FORREST STONES IN SLAMANNAN CHURCHYARD

1 SMELLIE IN CAMPSIE CHURCHYARD (situated right next to 650 & 651)

   James Mason
   Wife Margaret Smellie died 01.09.1787 age 34

The above MI's are from the East & West Stirlingshire pre-1855 MI's and the references are the stone numbers.

I was along at Kirkintilloch Churchyard during the summer and it’s a complete forrest (no pun intended!) You’d be hard pressed to find anything in there. The MI’s have probably been done at some point but I don’t have any info about them.

Cheers Anne,
I'm sure you've given me these before, or at least some of them.
I'm still having a hard time putting them all together.
There has to be a link...millers in that area, all called Forrest!

No probs Dave.

If only James and Janet had stayed put rather than having sprogs all over the place, it might have been easier to place them.

I wonder why they moved about so much? Obviously all these places aren't too far from each other but back in the 'olden-days' it would have been a different story - they couldn't just jump in the car!  ;D

I noticed I made an error on one of the MI's on my previous post - (2) Margaret Forrest (nee Brown) died 18.06.1839, not 1939 - Sorry!
