Hi TB

yes you are right, he lived in number 8 and Walsall History Centre say that he ran the Three Cups pub at number 7, which is opposite and is now River Island.  I did take a picture last week of number 8, but it is not too clear as there are boards around the shop for building work.  I will have a look at the River Island building tomorrow and see if there is anything "good" left of it.  Incidentally my mom tells me that there was a "lane" that ran up the side of the now River Island shop, do you remember that ?

Hello Carol

I don't really know Walsall - i just know the building through my work.  I have some pictures of the internal upper floor of No 8.  Its much as it was in the 19th Century - when your ancestor lived there!  I'll try and sort them tomorrow when i'm at work.

Regards

TB

Hello

Here are some pictures of No 8.

The second floor has largely remained unchanged since the 19th century as the staircase access has been removed.  Gas pipework is evident to the walls where gas light fittings would have been and no electricity has been provided.

Hope they are of interest.

TB

 8) 8) 8) Thanks to you TB That is amazing you have produced the images I had been seeking on my Hawkes family. I love the old windows, and are they timber floors? Is this residential or business photrographs of a renovation?

Yes the floors are timber.  The ground and first floor comprise retail premises and are knocked through. The second floor is accessed through a hatch as the stairs have been removed.  This floor is largely untouched (shown in the pictures) and its not difficult to imagine what it would be like for your ancestors to live there.
